Cool app

I actually really like this app I love how it lets u record ur route

Rip off

Paid $49 for chart access… that gives you a time limit of 60 minutes per day.

Response from developer

Hello and thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear of your frustration. But we are sure that side can be resolved and of course the usage should not be limited that way with the payed offline chart version. It seems that maybe you still have the online chart feature activated, which will lead to this limitation. To use the purchased offline charts, make sure to deactivate the online charts in menu > charts > offline charts. I hope this helps already and please get in contact with us if there are any questions remaining. You can also reach us directly by email using support@nvcharts.com

Not a great experience

Every time I try to use it it seems to take forever to load data.

I have older US East Coast Charts - NV updates don’t appear to exist

Did NV abandon the US East Coast? I see Florida and passages (16.1) but what about the others (3.1 and 3.1 for example)? I would hate to switch to another manufacturer. NV has a solid product.

Useful navigation tool

I like the fact it ties in with paper books of charts of areas.

Slow and not accurate

Not usable on an iPad. Too slow and bad coverage as well

Nearly there…….

Regarding the iPad versions: Could easily be the best of their kind except for two major problems. Firstly, the transition between charts is impractical, awkward and frustratingly (even contemptuously) expensive. There should definitely be overlapping areas, and coverage should be larger, even if it meant paying slightly more. This leads to poor coverage, especially inland, where too many canals are omitted, and being unrealistically expensive. (Two charts for Berlin and still not covered.) Navionics might not be as good, but at least they are affordable and have full coverage. Secondly.. When the charts need updating the old version just disappears. An old chart is better than no chart especially when you can look up the updates on the printouts you make from the emailed updates(another excellent feature). So for cruising you might need to have a satellite internet connection. Also, does this mean I have to pay for complete renewals every 12 months? I certainly hope not!
Of course, these problems may all arise from my ineptitude, in which case my criticism would be of the usability.

As for the paper charts: hands down 5 stars.

Excellent for preplanning

When we are starting our planning sessions for our next charter, the charts and the app give us all the navigation info we need before we get there.

No

Bought paper nvcharts in Grenada. The paper recreational charts are ok if a little expensive but the app is garbage. Nothing but raster charts. For less money go with Navionics.
Tried to install on a second device (iphone) as backup and it won’t accept the product code despite their claim to ‘family sharing up to 6 devices’
Save your money and get something better, there are lots to choose from.

Response from developer

Hello Martindpo, thank you for your feedback. I am sorry to hear that your were not quite happy. The sharing should work without the need of entering the product id again. You would need to use the same user account on our second device, and then your should be able to see and download all your chart in the Chart > My Charts menu. I hope this helped already and let us know if the issue remains. You can also reach us by email or phone, and we will be happy to assist further. in any case, have a great time out on the water. Great companion to the paper charts

I’ve used the app crossing from the Netherlands to England as a companion to the paper charts. It integrated easily with the boat network to show AIS data and is quick to reference in the middle of the night. A really positive surprise was that when planning at home, the online charts are all available so you’re not limited to those you purchased to look at different areas. The synchronization between laptop, phone and iPad works but sometimes has to be triggered manually so the routes and tracks are all up to date. Why not 5 stars? The function I miss is importing and exporting gpx to get the route to the boat instruments and importing tracks from them as the app isn’t running all the time. All in all an excellent combination.
