  • An ADHD essential

Automation is what people with ADHD can greatly benefit from, but we can’t expect them to write their own all the time. IFTTT is straightforward to use and comes with loads of pre-built examples.
Although other automation tools are available, IFTTT allows the experience to be consistent amongst devices.
I now have an app that creates a calendar entry (with reminder!) to drink water an hour after buying coffee: my banking app supports IFTTT.
It also supports many ADHD friendly apps and integrates well with Arduino via the usual webhooks services pattern.

  • Becoming less relevant

When it was the only game in town IFTTT had a role, but now, it is harder to justify. I think if you have the home automation infrastructure it may make sense, but if you are controlling from an iOS device, iOS shortcuts do most of what you want, and otherwise I keep finding that IFTTT can’t connect to the things I want it to.

I think that the pricing structure is too restrictive too - if the free segment had more capability it might encourage more people in but I find even the pro just doesn’t do enough. I haven’t bothered with premium because the problem is mainly lack of devices.

ANd there are missing basics - for example want to set a timer to leave something on for 30mins, as far as I can make out, you can’t unless the timer is in the device itself.

IFTTT is or should be a programming language, and clearly needs to be resilient to avoiding locking a system up, but it is missing many of the key structures you would expect.

The biggest gap is in its ability to access data from inside apple, and this probably isn’t IFTTTs fault - “privacy concerns” have been a great way for apple to stifle competition. But it is what it is…

  • Too Unreliable…

I've always considered IFTTT flakey at best, but the latest problem has me just abandoning it completely.

The ONE thing left I still used it for was to bridge my Wyze motion sensor to a Smart Life smart switch in my utility room to turn lights on, then off when the sensor cleared. It mostly worked OK for quite a while (even though there was an annoying 4-5 seconds delay before the lights would actually come on) but a few weeks ago it started doing the complete opposite. Enter the room and it would turn the lights off and when the sensor cleared it would turn them on, leaving them on until I walk into the room again. Brilliant!

I tried all the usual resets, deletes and re-adds with Wyze, Smart Life, and of course IFTTT but to no avail. Then following week it just suddenly started working fine again and I hoped it was just a temporary glitch that got fixed. This week however it reverted to the backwards behavior once again.

IFTTT is just too unreliable for me and I never liked the delay before the lights would come on as would have to stand in the dark for a few seconds waiting for them, so I've decided to just replace it all with a good old-fashioned old-school motion activated wall switch and be done with IFTTT and "smart switches" (at least in the utility room) for good.

  • Changes not saved properly in applet

When making a modification to an applet, I click configure then make the modification and click update and save, the modification is not saved properly when I return to the applet… need a fix please!
  • Worthless unless you’re willing to pay more than just having your own HA server

Free allows virtually no freedom to create anything functional and everyday it randomly changed the number of applets you can have. Today it was 2, yesterday it was 5. The day before it was 4 who knows what tomorrow will bring?
Interface is awful and whenever you try and edit an applet it resets EVERY SINGLE setting of every single action. Want to edit the brightness or a light on that command? Sure thing! Best be ready to and remember the settings for every other action in there because by clicking configure you’ve just reset EVERY SINGLE one to default.
Need help? Tough luck. ‘Contact us’ is locked behind a pay wall.

  • Location services rarely work correctly

This automation app has become a complete waste of time and garbage. I only use this app to automate motion detection for my security camera and power on/off capabilities on an air purifier. Lately, multiple days during the week the applets do not work. The applet or IFTTT is not recognizing me entering or exiting a predetermined geographic area and not performing the correct tasks. I have deleted the applets, added them back, and they still don’t work. I’m not sure why this keeps happening or what the solution is but it’s becoming more of a hassle and an annoyance to use this automation app than it is to not have automations in my home. It’s easier for me to open the apps that connect both my security cameras and my air purifier and manually turn them on and off instead of using this automation app anymore. Even after the latest update, it has not solved the bug. IFTTT-The idea behind your app is amazing, but the fact that I have not been able to successfully have my Applets work for more than a few days at a time is simply unacceptable. Please improve your geographic area feature or do away with it completely.

  • Works as intended!

    Easy to setup, very useful
  • Support issues

I had been a user for almost a couple of years and was successfully using the app with accessing my Blink cameras. Unfortunately I needed to change my password within IFTTT and since then I am unable to access the account. Speaking with the Blink support folks they said that it is an issue with their servers and they have not yet been able to resolve the issue. This has gone on for over a week and its very disappointing. If there was ever a reason for not subscribing to an app this is it.
Just read some of the hard to fine facts about this utility. If you are using a trigger to start something it will now take up to an hour for the trigger to occur but if you pay it will be there in around 5 minutes. Another strike against the free program. I guess they are ashamed to publish these changes to users after this last update. I guess they figured that waiting an hour was not a big deal.
Well for users if Blink beware that if you are using the free version to arm your alarm system it won’t work for an hour. Surprise no wonder why when I leave the house for a short trip the alarms are not armed.
Boy this change would have been nice to know.
Thanks for the notification for your updates.

  • Time triggers too slow - apparently deliberately!

I’m a Pro user so I pay a subscription and recently my timed triggers started to go off 5-6 mins late. Contacting support I was eventually told “ We spread out runs for Date & Time triggers to ensure our queues don't get slammed by requests every hour on the hour.”

What makes this statement ridiculous is the time trigger only allows you to pick on the hour or at 15 minute intervals so 4 options for all triggers! If they wanted to spread out the triggers make it possible to select by the minute!

One of the reason for paying his faster response times so clearly they have forgotten this and therefore I’m moving to another service and would advise anyone with mildly time critical triggers to avoid IFTTT.

  • Everyone wants everything for nothing.

Funny how the reviews used to be consistently 5-star ratings until (god forbid) the programmers and all the people who work to make this work want to be PAID for their time and OUR convenience. Everyone wants FREE but those same people certainly aren’t giving up their time and efforts for free. The few who actually do have a job on these reviews lately CERTAINLY wouldn’t expect to do their jobs for free, why would you expect all these apps for free? There are givers and takers, you all that want everything for nothing are obviously the latter.
Great APP, keep it up, fees are minimal for the convenience this brings.
THANK YOU for all your hard work!
