  • Great tools

The main advantage of Bookends is the iCloud sync. I can’t imagine why other products always want u to register on their website and I just hate that. Also, this one has a reasonable pdf readers which works perfect with pencil (it’s not a fancy one, but works very smoothly). And their default colors for pencil writing are very nice as well.

  • Promising but lacks a lot of functionalities

Used to be there were Papers and PaperShip, now Bookends appears to be the few games left in town for professional reading/annotation tools for researchers. Among the many functions lacking:

    * Ability to parse out a given PDF to get at least the title, authors and abstract into the meta data when there’s no search result available.

    * Ability to connect to services such as Mendeley to get the existing meta data/pdfs down.

    * Remember the state of the app when quitting.

    * After adding a pdf with no meta data, there appears to be no way to get meta data into the entry (at least not reliably).

    * The workflow at times seem nondeterministic, e.g., when finding a paper from in-app search and adding attachment pdf later, sometimes the paper only appears in the search section, not in the main “all documents” list.

    * Dark mode still needs a lot of fixing.

    Developer Response

If you see issues with dark mode you should send screen shots that illustrate them to tech support and we'll look into it. Note: for those who are reading this message, we have a forum on our web site and a support email link in the Bookends About section. These are the preferred ways of reporting bugs or sending feature requests.
  • Amazing

Can’t do research without it. Worth every penny. Constantly updated. I never write reviews but am so happy with this and grateful to the programmers.
  • Indispensable Research Tool

As a independent business consultant and genealogist, my days are spent researching and writing. After using Sente, Papers 3 and Mendeley, Bookends is a clear winner. Synchronization across my iMac and iPad efficiently operates in the background using iCloud. The ability to highlight, take inline notes and summary notes all from within the app is invaluable as I hate having to switch between various tools. Bookends (macOS) allows for scripting which enabled exporting notes into Scrivener (my writing platform) via OPML. Once writing, insertion of citekeys is straightforward. Bookends is an indispensable cornerstone application within my workflow.

  • Best reference manager for Mac/iOS users, period.

    - stable and reliable (even with >18k references!)
    - constantly improving
    - endless customizations
    - awesome when used with Mellel
    - exceptional support (queries reliably answered/solved within a few hours max, n>10 times over the past 10y)
  • Amazing

Finally an app that can seamlessly sync pdfs between my devices
  • Excellent

Using bookends for doctoral program it’s a great help. I use with scrivener and ms word Mac.
  • Difficult to navigate

    Just a pain in general.
  • Best PDF manager for iOS

After noticing that Papership was abandoned and getting frustrated at the lack of reasonable options for managing thousands of papers across Mac and iPad/iPhone, I was overjoyed to find Bookends. Syncing is seamless with iCloud integration, and the desktop application successfully imported 3,000+ references from Zotero all in one go. There are always things that could be improved on, but so far so good.

  • Always improving and incredible support....

Switched years ago after mixed experience with Endnote and alternatives. Jon is constantly adding and honing features, and tech support is amazingly responsive since you are literally dealing with the developer and not some help desk functionary.
