  • I use this app all the time

This app is absolutely fantastic. It has a huge database. You can easily search from term to term. My only gripe is that I wish it had more foreign borrowed words That have come in to common use more lately. Highly highly highly recommend this app. I was a huge fan of the website even before apps were thing.

  • Roots

It’s important to know our roots especially in regard to language.

Rather than trying to wade through the 20 set volume of the OED, which I can’t afford (and the fact my wife would scowl at me for the space it would occupy), Etymonline offers the roots of English in the palm of your hand.
  • I loved their web site, and then I found their app!

I love languages, under whose umbrella comes a love for words. I found Etymonline through a podcast called Grammar Girl, and I've never looked back. The app is extremely accessible with Voiceover, and the entries are well researched. I'll never guess at a word's origin again!
  • Outstanding App!

I rarely write a review about an app, but this is an app that is indispensable - I use it every day. The most significant features are that the number of entries is impressive (sometimes I will look up a word simply to see whether the app has an entry for it) and the thoughtfulness and depth of each entry. This is a must-have app for word geeks.

  • Most powerful tool I’ve ever used

Thank you thank you thank you. I can’t express enough gratitude to the person/people that put this together! It’s helping me tremendously with reading and understanding literature in English and also with connecting English words with Spanish words that have the same roots. I spend a LOT of time using this app and the web browser as well. Again thank you so much!

  • Gives insight into the mysteries of the world

I have used this source even before it was an app. I use it every day because it unlocks so many mysteries of the world. Look up the word “compete” for instance. Notice how it originally meant to “strive together” and then shifted over a thousand years to mean “rivalry”. It gets you thinking about why meanings change and how we can change them back.

  • Excellent resource!

This is one of my most-used apps. Provides lots of detail and history whenever I need to dig into a word deeply. Helps bring words to life when you know where they came from and how they’ve been used in the past. Thank you for a great tool!
  • Great interface and quick load speed

I didnt know the website had an app but now that I do, my browsing has become much much better. Navigation is better on the app without clunky text boxes and scrolling. Great app, nothing bad to say about it
  • A Wonderful Tool For a Biblical Interpretation!!!

The Bible was written long ago. But the spirit behind the book. The spirit of God himself who used these men to bring forth his word. Buried deep hidden truths in parables and sayings that can only be discovered, When trying to understand the meaning for why certain words were used in different context.

I started off with the KJV version but became lazy and slowly migrated to the NLT version over some years. Etymonline breaks down words to there root meaning so this tool I think would be ideal for anyone trying to gain a better interpretation of the word of God and who prefers the KJV but still has difficulty interpreting scripture. This app is a Gem!!

  • Move forward by falling back

The future is built by the past and remembrance leads to real progress. The only complaint I have is that more people have never heard of the idea that the language we take for granted actually came from people before us who were in most cases more nuanced in their understanding and verbal descriptions than we are. Please download and use this app (try and use it MORE than your current obscurantist dictionary) in order to actually move something forward in the world!
