  • The only app I use for English

Yes, I’m a word source geek, but I have always studied languages, especially European languages. Also sometimes I also freeze on spelling, but I have stopped using any app spellers, especially auto fill spellers. I only use this app. It’s fast, it gives you, in addition, the entire history of the word’s evolution at a glance, and with that, a clear idea of the intention of its use. You shouldn’t have to go to any other source. You won’t.

  • You did it!

Many, many moons ago, I spoke with the creator if etymonline about the possibility of creating an app, as I had been using it frequently for research in my historical fiction writing. He expressed to me how difficult it had been for him to find someone who could create the type of app that would function how he imagined.

He (you) did it! If you’re reading this, congratulations! The app is great and I am so excited to be able to use it while I continue my writing.

  • My first resource and only source for etymology over the OED

This is a wonderful app that I am honored and happy to support financially. The information I glean about each word is such delight—not only the English origin but cognates in sister languages in Germanic to the far-flung languages in India and Iran.

Please subscribe to the yearly plan and support them while saving over monthly option.

  • App Keeps Forgetting I Paid to Remove Ads

I literally went to bed with the app open last night, and unlocked the device to find the ads were back again. I shouldn't have to keep hunting down the "Restore Purchases" feature every few days while the developer double dips on my annual subscription fees plus ad revenue.

Edit: The app keeps nagging me to rate it 5 stars even though I’ve already rated it AND paid for it, and the ads are back yet again! If we can’t trust this developer to honor our purchases, how can we trust this app at all? What information is it collecting and selling to the ad networks?

  • Get this app!

The search is fast and you cannot easily find this information while clumsily searching google. All the information is there to satisfy your curiosity. I particularly like the home page which has roots that are present in many words which allow you to greatly expand your vocabulary by learning the component roots of words. This way when you come across an unfamiliar word like pernicious you know that the roots per= for, toward and nec= death which gives you a good idea of what the word means. I think expanding your vocabulary in this way is great. Thanks!

  • Nice improvement for invaluable resource

Very glad to have this app to replace the web link. The app is serviceable and a little easier to use than mobile web. But the online etymology dictionary is probably the best emergent reference of the web. Defiantly Web 1.0, it harkens to the days of the internet as reference tool, and there remain few true competitors to the insight, knowledge and joy of this tool.

  • This one you NEED!

If you have any—ANY—interest in words, you gotta have this app. All those times: “boilerplate,” “tenterhooks,” “husband,” etc. Where did that word come from? What on earth did I just say? ALL the wonderful history of how our language got where it is. ALL the lost power and energy buried in words we don’t even notice. Muscles that have gone flabby. This is an ABSOLUTE keeper!

  • Hello mobile rabbit hole

Love the site, have used it for years, and a dedicated app reduces the friction to access content on a mobile device. Sweet. To anyone who would like to complain about the subscription pricing - if you don’t like the business model, please consider the great amount of time spent developing and maintaining this app. Props to the developer for offering this for free to the iOS community. You inspire me to look for opportunities to delve into Swift and mobile dev.

  • Not compatible with Dark Mode

First, bug report. When the dark mode is on, I won’t be able to see the texts in the search list because they are white. I can’t see the words in my bookmark list either for the same reason. The background should not be so bright in dark mode.

The content is great. The app is simple and intuitive, even though the subscription fee is too high in my opinion, so I’m not considering paying for it. Merriam-Webster charges $6 for each year. The content is already impressive, and the app is well designed. Please consider a one-time payment option. I will be happy to pay for it if that’s provided.

  • I have waited so long for this app...

For years I have used, adored, and recommended the Online Etymology Dictionary to everyone with an interest in words.

Now it is finally an app and I am beyond thrilled.

For anyone that downloads this app—please spend the money for a subscription. The work, time, energy, and thoughtfulness that has been spent in creating this unparalleled resource should not be taken for granted and deserves support and the funding to continue developing.

The only problem I have noticed is that the lettering of bookmarked words is white, making them difficult to read or access. I’m sure this can be easily fixed...

This app deserves all five stars, and more!
