Unreliable, Frustrating, Costly

I’ve been using some sort of version of RWGPS for the last six years. It’s gotten slightly better over the years, but nowhere near what I believe it should or could be.

1. Long routes constantly fail to download
2. Trying to switch base layers on a map for a long route freezes the app
3. Downloading routes take forever
4. Downloading routes sometimes get stuck at 90 percent to 100 percent making it impossible to download another route.
5. Routes take forever to load when you are offline.
6. Trying to use this for live navigation is a joke. If you are a few feet from the route it beeps and beeps and beeps warning you that you are off route.
7. It’s very expensive for how poorly it performs
8. It loves to take you on short detours from your route that make no sense whatsoever.
9. It loves to try to route you onto private property.

The list goes on and on. I have about thirty more items that are unacceptable for a paid app like this, but it’s not worth my time anymore. I’ve gifted RWGPS with about $250 over these last six years.

The computer version is slightly better, but still clunky and annoying. It loves to add random things to routes and while splitting routes has gotten better over the years, it’s not where it should be.

Sorry for the criticism RWGPS. They are good folks, but their app has never been good. This will be my last time paying for the yearly subscription.

Response from developer

Hi there, thanks for your support over the years, and sorry to hear about your frustrations - no need to apologize. Any time you run into a problem, if you get in touch with us (info@ridewithgps.com), our team can help find out what's going on (as a longtime user you probably know this, but just in case). In general, we expect routes that are under several hundred miles/kms to perform well. Longer routes do sometimes present performance problems, though we have been chipping away at them. We are not perfect, but we care deeply about providing a good experience and a valuable service for our users. Thanks for taking the time to leave a detailed review; If you're open to it, sending us a note would help us look into why you had the issues you did (we can't connect app store reviews to users). You can feel free to use info@ or you can email me directly (I'm the mobile Product Manager) at carl@ridewithgps.com. I won't try to change your mind, but we genuinely care about fixing things, so all the info we can get helps. Thanks!

Disappointing

Slow and glitchy add up to a lot of frustration using any part of RWGPS. Not really worth the subscription fee. I wish it was

Hi there - thanks for using Ride with GPS. This isn't what we expect or aim for - please get in touch with us at info@ridewithgps.com or use the in-app support chat, and we can help find out what's going on, as well as help you get the most out of your account.

Charge sans authorisation.

Je hais quand il decide de vous faire une charge sans que vous l’ayez demandé. Il me charge 1 mois sans mon authorisation. Crosseur.

Just use google maps

This app is not useful for city tours. The navigation is no better than google maps and the interface is a bit clunkier. It does have a lot of bike routes submitted by others, but this is probably better for those who are training specifically for cycling.

Attempted to use this app in Singapore to tour the city, but we often encountered difficult roads with no bike lanes and the journey took so much longer that we had to cancel the tour. On a second attempt, google maps with its 'add stop' functionality to see certain landmarks proved much more effective.

I like Strava better.

I like Strava better. First because if I forget or failed to stop my ride recording I can go and edit it removing the driving home or whatever occurs at the end of it in Strava. Second The route was 300 feet off the road that it was supposed to be on causing confusion during a bike event for me. Third I also just like dislike the fact that the map always displays with the north towards the top of the screen, even when I am heading east or south which I find very confusing.. And just for a little bit more, Strava will track other things whereas you have to get a second app run with gps for running and I don’t know if they have a ski app.. The one feature that’s supposed to be the differentiator between it in Strava the turn by turn directions talk too much and also caused me confusion. And the directions were often not clear enough for me to follow without having to stop and review the map and try to figure out what’s going on which because the map is facing north I have to try to orient myself to it because it doesn’t line up with what’s in front of me.

Hi there, thanks for taking the time to leave a thoughtful review. A few notes that may be helpful: - Rides can be trimmed on the website (though this is currently a Premium feature), there are some instructions here: https://support.ridewithgps.com/hc/en-us/articles/11122571458459-Edit-Recorded-Rides. - Unfortunately we can't prevent event organizers from creating routes that might differ from the actual event route, but we are introducing some additional routing options that will help make those types of mistakes less likely. - The map view can rotate with the device heading if you prefer, just tap the compass icon to enable rotation, and tap again to disable. - We are primarily focused on cycling, but many people use the app to record other activities, and we'll likely improve how activity types can be differentiated in the future. If there's anything our team can help with, or if you have any feedback you'd like to share, you can always reach us at info@ridewithgps.com. Thanks for giving the app a try and happy riding!

Unintended additions to circular route

I copied into ridewithgps and then reversed a route; the Cantii Way in Kent, England. I then tried to split into three day segments but somehow it added more miles after my intended end which I then tried, unsuccessfully, to remove in order to have a correct end point, but:
1. The splitting process did not work as intended.
2. I could not remove the extra miles added somehow as it overlaid the original route. I tried to put in control points but only managed a small removal.
3. When I tried to drag back a point to create a definite end point it created extra loops.

To remove why can’t one right click between two control points and say delete?

Sometimes moving around the screen extra sections are added with no relation to the route!

Adding extra directional arrows would help and some way of differentiating an erroneous route overlay.

Fitbit

I wish it would work with my sense 2 Fitbit device

Miles better than Google maps

Wasn’t sure whether this app was current but it most definitely is.
Training for my first 100k sportive and got into some sketchy situations with Google such as the sun setting and all of a sudden finding myself stumbling about on a bridle way 😱.
There are thousands of routes. Search by road type, length and elevation. All I do is find a route that matches my training plan. I’ve discovered lots of new backroads and I’m no longer fumbling about on gravel or some farmer’s tractor path.
Some people on here complain about the app. I will say some of the settings aren’t so intuitive. It doesn’t always know that I’m doing the loop in reverse.
In terms of payments. I’ve just bought a month so I don’t need to fork out a year just as outdoor season is winding down.

Long Term Simple Reliability

I’ve been using RWGPS for seven or eight years for navigation overseas on unfamiliar roads with patchy or non-existent data, it remains my go-to.

Could use some improvements

I tried the app today following a pre-recorded group ride. I had the directions in my ear which was great. I did have a problem where I made the wrong turn and all I heard was a single ding. I didn’t know what that meant so I continued. I think for the subscription price it should be a bit more convincing, like 5 dings or a boing or even the voice saying you made the wrong turn. When I figured out that I had gone the wrong way it was difficult to get back on track. There is no help from the app voice control. I looked at the map and misread the icon direction that I was going. I thought the light (???) was a tail and went the wrong direction. Ended up closing the app and getting directions from the map app on my phone to get back to the start. I went 10 miles out of my way.

Hi there, thanks for trying Ride with GPS, and sorry about the frustrating off course experience - we normally do have multiple alerts, and are actually fixing the issue that only alerts you once that you're off course - easy to miss. We have also explored automatic re-routing, though it's a bit tricky depending on the route and how important it is to follow the original plan. We genuinely appreciate the feedback and encourage you to get in touch with our team at info@ridewithgps.com if there's anything we can do to help you get the most out of the app and our website! Happy riding!
