Reviews of Banner Saga

  • Feel Basic and Wasteful

    Overly simple storyline-
End of the world is coming from some force, you need to try to stop it.

Not much to do aside from its occasional shallow turn-based battle system. Mainly text based and often sitting there reading empty character development while watching a character blink or their hair blow in the wind.

Decisions have no prior / educated guess. It’s entirely random and will often lead to deaths of other characters. Some are the ones you put all your scarce resources into.

Turns into a “look up the decision on a guide” type of game because it happens way too often.

Long scenes of just watching your army walk until it reaches a “godstone” or finally makes it to a town.

Overall the game is just…..basic and kind of annoying. Not too difficult if you turn the difficulty down, but more sitting around waiting for nothing.

The saga is sort of pricey when you put them together and this doesn’t offer the third installment in the game, so you’re limited to the entire storyline.

PC versions are way overpriced for this.
I’d say skip it and find something else.

  • FF: Tactics and Tactical Ogre Fans Rejoice!

I have long been a fan of Tactics RPG games and this a great alternative for mobile gaming in the same line as some of the greatest ever. The storyline, game play mechanics and to some extent the music/FX are all masterfully put together to satisfy those who yearn for the better, simpler days of role playing. I will not dive deep in this review but this app is deff worth the penny. Prepare to submerge in many hours of fun tactics play with decently developed characters that place you on a viking-ish world with many fun elements. The only reason I wouldn’t rate the game a solid 5 is that the control system does take away some of the joy out of the game. There is no map rotation and its hard to select the correct square grid or even the dialogue options as they are placed to close. Not being able to manually save is another issue. Regardless, I can feel this game will be one that I will cherish as a new fave and can’t wait to play the rest of the saga.

  • Not a game, but that’s ok

This is not an RPG or tactical game. It is a choose-your-own adventure with intermittent RPG elements affecting the story. The story and music are great. The game play is subpar. The fighting gets really old by the end. Honestly, by chapter 7 I did nothing and just died every other battle or so just to get it over with ASAP to keep the story going. Leveling up or even switching characters (within a race) barely affects the battles. Leveling and purchasing supplies use the same currency, making leveling feel even more pointless.

If you want an engaging game, this is not for you. If you want an engaging digital comic, this is worth every penny.
