When a buoy, wind, or tide station goes offline, the full download failed. Now, you will still get data from the other online stations.

3.3

July 2, 2023

TLDR Version - Fixed Buoy Download and it is a lot faster. NOAA discontinued the service I was using to download the buoy data. I updated the app to use a different service for the wave data. The new source is a lot faster, but I needed to do more processing in the app.

Try out the new widget. You can select a default spot from the settings in the app. Then, you can add a widget to your home screen that shows up-to-date buoy, wind, and tide data. The widget should refresh every 2 hours during the day, and every 4 hours at night. The app will also load the default spot when you first launch the app.

Description of Surf Sessions

Surf Session makes it really easy to track your surfing. Just setup surf spots with a parking location, enable auto-record, and every time you finish surfing your phone will automatically download some buoy data (waves, wind, and tide) and notify you to record it. You can even rate your session right from the notification. You can also integrate your surfing into an overall fitness plan. This app will estimate the calories you burned while surfing and then share your surfing workouts with the Health App. All of your data is stored on your phone and backed up in your private iCloud space. The developer cannot see your location or data. You secret spots will remain secret. Please provide feedback. I will do my best to fix bugs and improve this app.

Reviews of Surf Sessions

  • Update lost all data. No response.

EDIT: the developer intentionally lost all of the sessions and spots according to 2.0 notes. That is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.

I used to like this app. I started using it to track my surf sessions. Then it updated with a new interface and logo and LOST ALL my sessions and saved spots.
I emailed the developer a week ago, no response at all.
Unacceptable from both a technical AND a customer support perspective.

    Developer Response

I am really sorry about your data loss. It was due to 2 reasons: 1) (My fault) I made this app for free in my spare time. As such, I didn't update the app for a while. Apple came up with a new way to sync data between devices after I published the first version of my app. I didn't bother to update to the new method for a few years, because I had other things to do, I wasn't charging money for it, and I didn't think anyone but me was actually using the app. If I would have updated sooner, I could have pulled all of the data into the new way to sync. 2) In an update to iOS, Apple broke the old way to sync data. This meant the the data on your device was no longer syncing to other devices, and as soon as you switched phones, the data would be gone. This completely cut off my access to the data, so I couldn't even copy the data over to the new sync method. I actually spent some money to talk with Apple Developer Support to find a way to access the data, but they said they doubt Apple will fix the bug because my method was deprecated (shouldn't be used anymore). It was really frustrating to me because I also lost all of my data too. I certainly understand why you are upset. I would have emailed back and explained the situation, but I never saw your email. Due to a small number of review, I didn't see this review until just now. I hope you can try the new version of the app. It has been rewritten to sync data much better and to improve the auto-recording. It is now syncing in the same way that Apple syncs data for their apps (like weather, stocks, news, etc). If I know that more people are using the app, I will put more effort to keep the app up-to-date and working.
  • Geo-Location

Luv this app, helpful for keeping up with my sessions and the surf data. But the Geo-location doesn't seem to work anymore. It used to record my sessions automatically but now doesn't...please fix. Thx.

    Developer Response

The new version of the app should fix your problem. But if it ever stops working, you can also try disabling and re-enabling the auto record feature. That will reset the auto record and should get it working again.
