Awesome Game

Awesome game that stays about as true to history as a mobile game can! I played on my iPad and the game is very in depth, yet very accessible and easy to play. The AI is very good and unforgiving making solo play a rewarding challenge. I love the time the developer has taken to make the scenarios historically representative. On the coral sea scenario, the outcome of my match was EXACTLY the same as what historically occurred. Seaplanes and submarines are worthwhile add ons to the game.
Looking forward to future content

US Aircraft Squadrons Seriously Understrength

While I love the mechanics of this game, it seems virtually impossible to win playing as the US. The US aircraft squadrons are seriously under strength, compared to their historical counterparts. For example, for the Midway scenario, each US carrier has only 20 planes. At the actual battle, each carrier had at least 77 planes. The game scenario OOB for the Midway squadrons is 6 F2As, 2 F2Fs, 5 SBDs, 4 SB2Us, 2 TBFs, 1 B-26, and 5 B-17s. The actual strength of the squadrons at Midway was 21 F2As, 7 F4Fs, 19 SBDs, 17 SB2Us, 6 TBFs, 4 B-26s, 17 B-17s, and 31 PBYs. The game scenario has no PBYs, depriving the US of long range search capability.

Response from developer

Actually, each air unit counter represents 4 planes. (See the page describing air units) There are PBY which are managed by the program. You may notice white search areas on map

One problem

I think we shouldn’t have to deal with In-app purchases here, it just feels greedy to have to pay to play Japan or play other scenarios

Response from developer

An interesting subject You have to know that the firs version of the game, back in 2016, had only 5 scenarios Then new features and a 6th scenarios came in A lot of work and love has been thrown into new scenarios and features which are justifying the in-app, especially because they are totally optional to enjoy the game However, after a while, the combined price of all in-app might be a too step for the new comers We could increase the base price while pouring more stuff in the base version but it is difficult to increase it without daunting new players They are reflexion about making a new app comparable to the PC/Mac version with a relative few number of in-apps or using a premium subscription which would unlock everything To be continued

Outstanding War Game

This is an accessible old school war game with a good mid level of strategy. It really captures the tension and drama of these battles as you balance the risk / reward of different approaches. For me this is a bargain at the price and the IAPS are worth the additional investment. Unlike a lot of the “attention economy” stuff out there today, it also makes great use of your time.

Great Game!

I grew up playing the classic hex/counter games covering the Pacific War like “Carrier” from VG and am really impressed with this game.

I’ve had it for a while and the Developer continues making improvements, adding new content/scenarios/options and listening to player feedback.

5-stars!

Excellent game with exceptions

Pretty good hex and counter. The major issue is with the AI and RNG, they (AI) always seem to land more bomb and torpedo hits on a human player regardless of cap. Not just that, human player attacks always seem to miss and only score 1 or 2 bomb hits, even with a large air group. And it also seems unfair to give the AI 50% extra victory points for sinking ships when you play the IJN while only giving us a flat 10 points when playing as the USN. That just seems like the game favours the AI more then the player.

Response from developer

Actually, the AI has the same chance to hit Thant the player. It is true that victory conditions are a bit different, the AI being less able to manage this part of the game

Unbelievable great game

This game continues to astound me. I have been playing this game since it came out. Periodically it is updated with new battles and features. The current update and changes means i have to replan all of my carrier and surface formations. While on most games this is a pain in this particular game it brings a fresh feel to game play and brings about refreshed challenges. The only reason I give 5 stars is 6 or more is not a option.

Beer & pretzel wargaming in my hand!

Fantastic adaption of a classic hex and counter war game in the grand tradition of any of the Avalon Hill classics. The AI is challenging and the UI a breeze. Highly recommended especially if you love the old bookshelf war games of the 70s & 80s and want a taste of Pacific saltwater and WW2 carrier warfare in your pocket.

Beware!!

At first glance Carrier Battles for Guadalcanal looks to be an enjoyable mobile, hex, turn based strategic game. But it is a sloppy attempt to get your money and lure you to paying more. To begin, the game has NO SOUND...none at all. No background music, no attacking sounds...nada, zip, zilch! This alone makes the game a bust!

Great Game

Has constant support and is continually improving. Game also plays fine without the DLCs, its a complete game even without them, but they’re affordable and provide further replay-ability. Is quite easy to play but is a really detailed depiction of carrier warfare
