Bad support, no option to call

Great application, great idea, great features, good pricing…. And the support service that will make you want to pull your hair out. To start, the integration with Apple is HORRIBLE, do NOT start a subscription using Apple’s subscription option. Reasons being the plans offered are only 20% of the available plans offered through the main site or any other platform. You will not be able to switch to another payment option or plan offered outside of the 3 options listed for Apple. You will not be able to cancel your subscription immediately. Now for the support… the only support offered is via email, unless you purchase a business plan which allows for a request to call… I would have done this option just for the ability to call and resolve my problem in a timely manner but unfortunately they will not allow you to switch to a business plan if you’re honest about this being the reason for the switch. If you do contact them via email, expect 3-5 days for a response… yes, 3-5 days every response… I’ve even replied back to a response within 3 minutes of receiving the email in hopes for a reply and had to wait 3 more days… if you have a time sensitive, please save yourself and try another option. No matter how good it is, it will all be worthless when you have to wait a month to fix something, trust me.

Thank you for the review and feedback - we've shared it with the team. That is correct, we do not offer phone support except for enterprise-level clients for onboarding purposes. Nevertheless, we'll share your suggestion with the team. Regarding the response times, we usually respond in 24-48 hours to Free users and in less than 24 hours to paid users. Sometimes these times vary depending on the volume of tickets at that moment. We appreciate your honest feedback and feel free to contact us on our official Twitter handle (@ProtonSupport) if you have any additional feedback you would like to share with us.

Storage restrictions unless you forward emails

I’ve recently set up my Proton Mail account, but I’m at a loss why the email storage is restricted to 500MB unless I give access to emails from a different email account.
I have read about the security and privacy of Proton Mail, so thought it would be good to have an account for things like Bank Accounts etc. I want my Proton Mail account to be completely separate from all other accounts, to maintain as much security as possible. Forwarding emails from another email provider can open up potential weaknesses, but being told that this is a required in order to get the 1GB storage, feels like I’m being punished for wanting to keep my Proton Mail account as secure as possible

Thank you for your honest feedback. When you forward your emails from Gmail to Proton, Proton Mail will remove trackers from your Gmail messages and protect them with zero-access encryption. Nevertheless, please contact us at https://proton.me/support/contact so we can help you accordingly with the storage bonus.

Avoid

Support email only even with paid subscription.

I got hacked by malware and they used the proton apps to delete some data, proton said nothing had been done, but there were scores of open sessions as they’d stolen the session cookies.

Worse than gmail.

And now it’s suspended because the hackers used it for spam with no way of getting my data or emails back.

I’d say it’s a trap for vulnerable people to give their power away to others who then steal your data.

Lucky my passwords were not on there as when they suspend it suspends every product not just one.

AVOID

Update 12th November after developer response:

I filled out the form twice not even acknowledged in a week no response. I had cleared evidence the hackers activated the app the date and time and it corresponded to the date and time the files were deleted from proton drive.

Why would you suspend someone’s drive data access passwords and everything because of an email issue.

Apple would never do that, no self respecting company would do that. I am going to sue Proton for a breach of GDPR.

The proton drive app was accessed by 2.9.0 address which is sentinel sms software: I reported this breach but they said it was fine. Scores of sessions had been opened up but you say there’s no breach; incredulous.

Sorry to hear that. Could you contact our abuse team at https://proton.me/support/appeal-abuse so they can help you accordingly? Edit: Could you please share your ticket number with us here so we can track your case internally?

insane

edit: I just had a developer response asking me to check my password and get in touch if theres still a problem. Insulting... particularly given thats the first thing any normal person would do... more so given they dont respond to support requests.

these people are crazy. get an update, get forced to sign back in, then forgot password or some reason proton pass is coughing up the wrong one. try to reset pw and get told Im about to wipe out my data.
are you serious? you've locked me out of one devices email, how long before you lock me out of my password manager?
did you get bought out by microsoft or something? what happened, your stuff used to just work... now its a liability...

That doesn't sound right. Please make sure you're entering the correct password by tapping on the "Eye" icon. If you're copying it from an external source, make sure you're not copying any additional characters. Are you able to log in to your account on the web app? Contact us at https://proton.me/support/contact so we can investigate further. Edit: If you've submitted a customer support request, please share the ticket number with us here so we can track your case internally.

Encryption good, app… meh

I love the idea of proton but the reality is, the app is years behind others. Basic things like two level swiping (short /long) and a widget for the home screen just aren’t there. While I can see doing some very personal, never dig up for anything give only to friends email via proton, the reality is that shifting all my custom domains, I’d need the full suite) just doesn’t work right now because the app is too basic. I hope they keep going and the service grows. I hope they can find app improvements. Getting off the big g and a is a good thing, but let’s not kid ourselves that we’re being secure overnight, if we take email with us.

End resuot( definitely I’ll use this for critical accounts stuff. But Inwont be going all in yet.

Hello! Thank you for the feedback - we've shared it with our team. We'll add your +1 for these features so our development team can prioritize implementing them in a future update of the app. If you have any additional suggestions, contact us at https://proton.me/support/contact to let us know.

No ability to use the Mail in a free version.

UPDATE:
The developer responded with misinformation about still being able to manage your subscription using Apple subscriptions. When I go into the Apple application, it clearly states under my account “cannot manage subscription through the app” which is exactly what I’m talking about. Clearly the people responding to the reviews Have no idea what the product is or what’s working and what’s not.
Old Review: When I first got this product, there was a free version that I could try. It was great. I appreciate everything they’re trying to do. I loved it so much that I signed up for the paid yearly subscription. I have paid twice for this yearly renewal.I don’t like the fact that you lose access to your information between subscriptions. I understand if they won’t let you send data, but you should at least be able to see things you need in your folder whether you have purchased or not. My other big beef is that you can no longer pay for your subscription through Apple. They sneakily removed it as an option to pay with your Apple subscription. I have a feeling it’s because they don’t want Apple taking a cut of their profit, but this is a huge inconvenience for a customer. They should reinstitute the ability to pay for your subscription via your Apple subscription services.

Thank you for your feedback and for supporting Proton with your subscription. We understand your concerns about access to your data between subscriptions. While Proton restricts access to certain features when an account is downgraded, your data is never deleted, and once your account is reactivated by resubscribing, you regain full access to it. You can find more about our policy here: https://proton.me/support/delinquency As for Apple Pay, we still support it as a payment method. You should still have the option to pay for your subscription via Apple services. If you encounter issues, feel free to reach out to us at https://proton.me/support/contact Edit: Thank you for the follow-up. If you've previously subscribed to one of Proton's plans through the web app at https://account.proton.me/switch, then you'd need to downgrade your account to Free and purchase a new subscription through the app. Additionally, Apple charges an additional fee on top of the price for the plan you're subscribing to for purchasing the app through the App Store. As we've mentioned, contact us at https://proton.me/support/contact so we can clarify further.

Caching recent emails would be nice

I think it’s a solid app and I support the proton mission. I do think it could be a lot better if it downloaded recently opened emails, as I’ve been in a few situations where I had no internet access and therefore lost the ability to read the emails I was just looking at. Having emails downloaded would also help speed things up as I find that it takes quite a bit longer to open emails than say, on the Gmail app. The way to implement something like this would need to be carefully implemented, but I think it’s necessary.

Thank you for the feedback and for sharing your interest in this with us! We've added your vote to the existing request for supporting an offline mode to help prioritize this as a future implementation. Feel free to reach out to us at https://proton.me/support/contact if you have any additional suggestions on what we can do to improve.

Not downloading

Since the latest update (4.16.2) the app takes ages trying to download mail, then throws in the towel and closes.

Response from developer

Hi! Please try clearing the app cache from the app settings or alternating between Mobile Data and Wi-FI. You can also try the "Full reset on next launch" feature on your device settings to see if that helps. Search for the Proton Mail app in your device's settings and enable the "Full reset on next launch" and let us know how it goes. If the issue persists, report it to us at https://proton.me/support/contact so we can investigate further.

Lethargic Loading

Either emails load very slowly, or they won’t load up at all and then the app often just shuts off.

Response from developer

Hi! We're sorry to hear that. Could you try clearing the app cache, logging out, and then logging back in to see if that helps? If the issue persists, contact us through the "Report a problem" feature in the app menu.

Tech with human touch

Ives used Protonmail for several years and sm happy to pay for a secure email service. Over the years new features have been added to Protonmail. If I have a problem I’ve been able to get through to a human being and het advice to find a solution. The price for an email service is also reasonable and just today someone comment on how nice and simple my email address is. It’s easy to set up several email addresses to deliver mail to the main inbox.
