Safe but has some problems

Yes Firefox is safe – I've used it for years and it is still good for many things. However I've found recently that it struggles with PayPal transactions and often fails. Specifically, when making a payment for an online purchase using PayPal, one usually clicks on the PayPal option at the vendors web page and it should then transfer the buyer to the PayPal web site for completion (or it sometimes just pays the amount due using the preferred credit card in the buyer's account at PayPal without first transferring to the PP site). But Firefox does neither. It just freezes on a new tab named "Blank." On the other hand DuckDuckGo browser works flawlessly for these transactions — the transfer to PayPal's site is automatic and immediately a screen comes up that allows Touch ID to be used to enter the buyer's PayPal account without looking up the password. What could be easier than that? So DDG is my main browser now. Although I'm not an IT guy I understand that DuckDuckGo was designed for safety from its inception and I believe it IS safe. But anyway, if I want to use the PayPal option for online payments then apparently I cannot do so using Firefox, so there is really no choice. I have to use some browser other than FireFox and I've chosen DuckDuckGo.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. It sounds like Firefox for iOS struggle to work as expected when you attempted to do online purchases. Please take a moment to post this report on our forum and our community will be glad to help: https://mzl.la/3owNESY

Search bar needs to move

1. A major quality of life improvement would be to move the search bar to the bottom of the screen like Safari does. It’s very annoying to have to reach up to the top of the screen when you want to type every time, making using the browser with one hand very difficult.

2. Secondly, I think they should implement a new tab button at the bottom of the screen like Brave does. It saves time opening new tabs.

3. Private tabs aren’t protected by FaceID or password, which they really should be.

Great Browser

If your security and privacy conscious this is the app to use for your browsing needs

Thank you for your rating. Hope you continue to enjoy Firefox for iOS!

Best search engine for both you, and I.

Fire fox is lacking in some areas, personalisation for example. Fire fox has no Ai features that get shoved down your throat. Google, bing, and edge all have these superfluous features most people have no need for. Fire fox allows any search engine. Google is a terrible browser. I suggest if you go to fire fox, go to duck go as well. Another thing I like about fire fox is that it’s completely free. No ads on the home page (if you disable.)

Battery killer, privacy stealer

Not sure what FF is doing in the background, but after a few minutes of browsing, my battery drops 30%. Not having this problem with other apps but this is untenable. UPDATE Jan 2022: don’t know what you did, but the newest update is even less functional. Bookmarks no longer work right (why do I have to go back to the first tab of bookmarks every time I open it? You fixed this), there’s fewer links on the home page (but plenty of empty space. Is there some reason why it can’t handle more than 24?) and still eats battery like it’s got a tapeworm (seriously. Goes from 100% to 70% in about 15 minutes. I don’t understand how blocking ads and preventing background processes takes up so much more power). I’d stop using it, except there really isn’t a good alternative. But if there was… UPDATE 2024 v 128: And now, because some people couldn’t figure out that there was a setting to close private tabs when leaving private browsing and complained that their private tabs were closing, they removed the setting entirely so that private tabs stay open. Not everyone wants that. Please bring the setting back. It doesn’t have to be on by default (though should be, that’s the point of private browsing) but at least give us the OPTION. Maybe Duck Duck Go’s browser is the better option.

Hi! In response to your feedback, we have reintroduced the option to persist tabs in Firefox iOS. It is already available in our last version (FX 129). In order to persist private tabs, download the new update (FX 129), navigate to settings and disable the default setting “Close Private Tabs when Leaving Private Browsing”. We appreciate your patience and your continue support to Firefox. Please let us know if you have any additional questions or concerns. Thanks!

Incognito tabs not saved

I’m often using incognito mode for sites I’m not wanting to have track me, and have several tabs open in this mode. When relaunching Firefox it would resume my Incognito mode & could continue using the open tabs as before. However, 2 updates ago this all changed. Now any open Incognito tabs are deleted & I cannot re-use them like I could before. Now I have to go back to each one in order to visit those sites again. Very frustrating. Please restore the original behaviour that was always occurring as I’m now tempted to use a different browser app that works how Firefox used to.

Used to be good. Not anymore

Been using Firefox since before Mozilla going back to Netscape and ncsa mosaic nearly 30years. Not any more. They removed/deprecated the private browsing functionality which was the biggest feature. They’ve ignored feedback regarding this “feature improvement ” and haven’t even got the gonads to reply. Looking elsewhere. Goodbye Firefox, so long and thanks for all the fish.

Bring back private tabs

Why would you remove the feature to keep your old private tabs every time you reopen the app?? The reason i’ll be switching is because this feature is absolutely essential.

New update practically defeats the purpose of using this app for your main browser

Removing the option to retain tabs on private browsing is a blunder the likes of which I will never comprehend. The reason myself and so many others chose Firefox was for its privacy, security, and fewer ads while being easy to use. When private tabs are auto-cleared the app automatically slides over to regular browsing, creating user frustration at the potential decreased privacy of not realizing they’re off private. This definitely isn’t making the app easier to navigate or more accessible for anyone. Not every tab needs the permanence of a bookmark and most people don’t want to have to go through the process of getting back to a single page, much less the multiple tabs that most active internet users have up for a singular combined purpose.

I’m deleting the app from my phone and will use another browser until the issue is resolved, but since I’ve seen little response and no direct evidence of any real action taken on Firefox’s end I’m going to assume that there is no intention to do so and won’t hold out hope for a resolution any time soon. I’d love to know if any real action takes place, but until then I’d encourage everyone else to also seek out browser options that don’t inspire immediate irrational rage upon reopening.

Search suggestion bar is a flaw

I’ve proudly used Firefox on PC for over 20 years, through good and bad. But I only permanently swapped to mobile last year. Overall, the mobile app has been much improved in recent years and is clearly superior to safari. A few gripes remain but it seems the team is aware of them.

My main issue is with the search suggestion bar. I’m not sure when it first appeared or when I even noticed it, but its position above the keyboard means you will inevitably hit it while typing and, because it swaps your search engine without any feedback, you won’t know until you’ve already used the wrong search engine. Worse, it isn’t in the real settings menu, but instead uses its own settings menu with a “magnifying glass” icon, not a usual gear or the three horizontal lines symbol the firefox app uses. The magnifying glass icon was the last button I tried using to open its settings, considering I thought it was just another search feature. Very confusing design.

Overall, the search bar does not feel well thought out or tested at all, which gives a slight blemish to an otherwise much improved app.

Thank you for sharing such a detailed review about Firefox for iOS. It sounds like you had encountered trouble with our Search bar. We're sorry to share that it's not possible to disable Firefox Suggest at this moment. You can disable Google Search suggestions, and you can read more about how to do this here: https://mzl.la/3SKCV3R. That being said, it's really helpful to know that you prefer not seeing Firefox Suggest at all, and we've made sure of sharing your feedback with our team.
