Demo only after 7 years

TLDR, after buying your butterfly and paying your subscription fee, after 7 years you should expect to have a demo only model and be forced to buy their newest product.
Bought in 2018 when it came out during my residency. Loved it. $400/year obligatory for first year. Fine. Can’t screenshot without getting a warning every time. Fine. Forcing updates just as you’re about to start scanning a patient. Fine.
Incessant email “offers” to upgrade your device to the newest one. Send to trash.
Then an email in 2025, 7 years later, stating they are abandoning your device from future updates for “security reasons.” Ok, fine. I don’t really need to update, app works fine.
Then you open your app to find big warning signs “NOT FOR PATIENT USE” and “DEMO ONLY.”
Can’t even use color flow or even measure lol.
I thought I bought an ultrasound machine; turns out it was just a 7 year lease.
Using both demo butterfly and my Eagleview (bought few years ago still working well). Eagleview actually fits in pocket and is my go to for diagnostics for that reason.
Butterfly only for needle guidance as the Eagleview does not visualize needle.
If you are going to buy butterfly, buy it used.

Best Value Buy

One of the best medical purchases I’ve ever made. Brings patient interaction back. Great immediate clinical value in the ICU and clinic. Highly recommend.

Depends on context

Your review of this machine is going to depend dramatically on your context. We previously had a different probe which worked with our iPad and it was much, much better but was apparently discontinued. If you are used to using a portable GE machine, this ultrasound is atrocious. If you’re used to not having one I’m sure it’s a nice addition. Our administration replaced nicer machines with these so they are understandably not well received.

Cardilogy

Use it frequently in office visits when patients are referred for various cardiovascular disease processes. Helps with CVD tia stratification as well.

Compatibility

Please allow this to also be used on MacBooks like the Air or the new Neo. Thanks

Don’t waste your money- they will junk it in 5 years

I bought the butterfly iq in 2020, for $2300. Image quality was not great so I didn’t use it that often for clinical purposes , but it was nice to have whenever I needed it, or so I thought. However, after 5 years, Butterfly has decided to discontinue support for the older model completely!! I saw the trade-in option and thought great, but it turns out that I still have to pay an additional $2K even after trading it in?? It’s crazy to spend that much money ($2K + $200 yearly subscription for imaging features) and end up with a piece of junk every 5 years, at which time they will ask you for $2-4K all over again! The only thing I’m thankful for is that when I recommended Butterfly purchases for our department budget, they deferred it for next year due to more immediate needs-obviously I will no longer recommend this probe and I would have been so embarrassed to spend department money on expensive lemons. Just shocked at their sleazy business practices and how they treat early adopters.

Portable and practical point of care ultrasound

I use the Butterfly each week when seeing patients. It has greatly improved my ability to diagnose and treat patients. The ability to use one probe for cardiac, pulmonary, abdominal, obstetric and vascular studies is extremely helpful.
While it doesn’t have the clarity of much more expensive cart based ultrasound systems, I have found that it is sufficient in most situations to confirm or refute a diagnosis. It is portable and readily accessible. I carry it with me whenever I see patients.
I also greatly value the ability to save and review studies with other colleagues who are using the Butterfly platform. I have used it to teach many doctors and to learn from many others. I am a pediatric cardiologist who works in a remote setting and I have come to rely on the Butterfly every week.

US at fingertips

Have used for many years now. Latest model is great for cardiac and small parts as well. Perfect for bedside, rural, home visits. I use for teaching and for medical missions around the world.

New update only works for ios17- bricks lightning probe

iPad 5th gen doesn’t support ios17 and newest app update this month requires ios17. Probes with Lightning connector have almost been entirely bricked by this planned obsolescence as devices with lightning ports can’t handle the iOS required to run the app after this required update to the app.

Error con la actualización del iPad

Actualice el iPad y ya no me deja accesar a la aplicación, me marca error. Espero lo solucionen pronto

Game changer

I have been using the Butterfly IQ since it’s been available. It has become an integral part of my practice, both inside the office and the hospital. The image quality and preset features combined with its potential is amazing.

His little yet, powerful and multifunction ultrasound has improved my practice more than any other single device

Terrible

I have had my IQ3 for less than 6 months. Use just for pocus teaching. Connectivity suddenly failed despite using on different iPads. Terrible to fail so soon after purchase. I also have 3x iq probes.

The company’s ongoing hidden costs and deliberate degrading of functionality of older probes such as IQ forcing users to pay for expensive upgrades is akin to what apple did with older phone battery life! The company ethos is wrong. Thoroughly disappoint and would not recommend. Avoid

Grenzt an Betrug

Love butterfly

Better resolution
Multiple presets that enable me switch from one exam to another briefly
Superb resolution.

Should not be used in clinical study

If you want bulky, grainy artifacts and unclear definition then this is a great ultrasound for your clinic. By far the worse I’ve ever used.
