Disappointing for CarPlay Users – Needs Major Improvements

This app offers some interesting information about Cape Cod attractions, but it seriously drops the ball when it comes to navigation. If you’re hoping for CarPlay integration—don’t. It does not work with CarPlay. While the audio plays through your car speakers via Bluetooth, all the visual directions stay locked to your phone screen, which is frustrating and unsafe to fumble with while driving.

Worse still, the app gets easily confused about direction. You can start the tour at either end—Provincetown or the other side—but the app often misreads your route and gives incorrect instructions (telling you to turn right when it means left, for example). And if you miss a turn? Good luck. It won’t re-route you or help you get back on track.

Another major gripe: the “Learn More” button misleadingly implies Apple Maps integration. That’s only partially true—it uses Apple Maps just to get you to the starting point. After that, you’re on your own. When I started in Provincetown, it insisted I begin at a closed pier and refused to budge until I manually skipped ahead. I had to constantly advance the app myself, check the next attraction, and then use Apple Maps separately to navigate there.

Yes, I learned a few interesting facts along the way, but for the price, this app made me do way too much work. Honestly, I would’ve been better off grabbing a free pamphlet from a visitor center and plugging the stops into my GPS. If you rely on your phone for navigation and don’t use CarPlay, you might find it usable. But for anyone with a newer car setup, this app feels outdated and not worth the money. Very disappointed.

Value for money

The app was awesome! We got to see some really cool places and learned a lot about the areas history. We also did the walking tour in Provincetown, which made our trip more valuable.

Response from developer

Thank you for the great feedback! We're thrilled you enjoyed exploring and learning with the app, and that the Provincetown walking tour added extra value to your trip. Looking forward to being part of more of your adventures!

Whitewash

Tried the demo. The spin on relations between First Nations and the Pilgrims is whitewashed at best. It’s 2021. Do better.

Response from developer

In that case, I’d highly recommend the Full Tour! The Nauset story goes a lot deeper than what’s in the demo, which is simply a brief intro into a topic people vaguely remember from school. The full story is rich, deep, and much more complex.

Well done!

We have been to the Cape ever year. With this story, it brought out a very different world. A whole new dimension came up. Very useful app. Each point of interest was tied with my phone gps. If you have time, go through all the stories at home first. Well done!

Response from developer

I’m so glad you enjoyed the Cape Cod self-guided tour! It’s great for all abilities and ages. If you’re planning a few more trips like this, you may enjoy our Cape Ann tour or Newport tours — or even our Kancamagus or Acadia tours.

Fun for the family

Driving out to Provincetown can be pretty boring, especially for the kids, but this tour is a great way to keep them (and the adults) entertained. Lots of interesting historical information alongside some recommended stops along the way. We didn’t have time for most of those detours since we were going straight to Provincetown but I plan to do them next time. The tour begins at a random rest stop, which I found strange, but it is conveniently located on Rt 6 and has a bathroom. The information center at the rest stop was closed due to covid but from that point on, the stories began to play automatically as we drove. There was one time the audio stories got cut off but overall it worked well.

Response from developer

I’m so thrilled you enjoyed the Cape Cod self-guided tour! I’m glad we were able to keep both kids and adults entertained — it’s a tough line to walk sometimes. You can visit those detours anytime you like, whether on a future trip or even from your couch at home. Thanks again!
