Great app

This app is indispensable, but it has lost one feature that was very useful, and which may still be there but hidden. When using 2 iPhones with the same iCloud Apple ID, any text entered on one iPhone in the app, almost immediately appeared on the 2nd iPhone in the app. It was the best way to transfer links or text between the two. Any way to bring this back?

Can’t live without this app for 10 years now

Updated review 2026: 10years and going !
My only cover is the creep of AI in this app. I don’t know who controls that data but hopefully I’ve turned off the AI function, but I might have to stop using this after 10 years…

I need an easy way to copy and paste without all of the formatting baggage from different file types. For example , going through CVs I need to copy from PDF Word etc and put them in my own document ( in my case Apple pages or Word) just select what I want paste it to Clean Text Then copy from there. How can this still only be a “ non subscription app??” Thank you for making it an affordable one time purchase

This App Restored My Faith In Humanity!

I bought this app last year and used it practically every day, but when the pricing model changed, I lost access to all the features I had come to rely upon. I reached out to the dev team, and they were incredibly kind, offering me exactly the assistance I needed to restore permanent access to all the features I had when I first paid for the app. I have literally never in my life had a customer service experience this good. The only comparison I can think to make is to the ending of Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, when Rose of Sharon, having just birthed a stillborn child, offers an emaciated stranger milk from her breast’s milk spigot. Being able to convert RTF into UTF-8 plaintext, remove empty lines, go from sentence case to title case and back, and much much more is the Unicode-HTML-JSON-hopper’s equivalent of being nursed back to health by a stranger’s breast during the compounding crises of mass migration, economic collapse, and ecological disaster precipitated by the Dust Bowl, mechanization of agriculture, and the corporate displacement of tenant farmers. Even if my $0.99 unlimited access to the app hadn’t been restored thanks to the help of the Christlike developers, the app is so useful and life changing that, if I had no other choice, I still would’ve paid the new $40 asking price (which I will acknowledge is an easy statement to make after-the-fact, but you’ll just have to trust me that I’m being sincere, which I am. This review is sincere — there is too much at stake for it to be anything less).

Hi, your frustration is completely valid. Just to be clear: this was not a pricing model change — it was a bug that caused the app to not recognize previous purchases for some users. You don't need to pay again. We're aware that the latest update hasn't resolved all cases and we're actively investigating. Please make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID used for your original purchase — if that's already the case, we're working on it.

Disloyal to customers

I paid for the previous version of this app and never had a problem with it. Now with this update, I’m not allowed to do anything with it anymore even though I paid unless I buy a yearly subscription or pay $40 for a lifetime subscription. There’s no way to go back to the previous version. I feel cheated.

Update 28-Feb-2026: the developer sent a response saying that he is now going to take into account past purchases. However, it’s been two updates since he sent that to me and everything is still dead and locked behind an expensive subscription. Even though I had already purchased this.

Update 18-Mar-2026: as of the last update, the developer restored functionality to those who had previously purchased the app. I think that was very decent of the developer to make that change. I am uncertain how that will be going forward seeing as how expensive the new subscriptions are, but for now things are back to normal. Thank you.

All features now behind expensive subscriptions IAP

Update Mar 8: Developer provided a solution to work around the issue.

Original review:

I bought this app in 2019, but after today’s update all of the previously existing features now seem to be behind either a subscription or expensive IAP. There was no indication of the change in the release notes. What a lousy way to treat customers.

Removed functionality to push users to subscriptions

This app used to be a one time purchase. Now it’s a subscription. The developer has removed all functionality from the app for existing users who had previously purchased the app, and is demanding they now purchase a subscription in order to continue to use the any of the features they have already paid for and been using for years.

The developer clams this is a “bug,” and two updates were supposed to “fix” it. They haven’t. In fact, all they did was seemingly make the subscription nag screen even more prominent. As far as I know, there is no way for the “restore purchases” feature to pick up a prior app purchase, as this was not an in-app purchase.

Furthermore, there is a FAQ on the developer’s website about this same exact issue with the Mac version of their app, with the exact same response from the developer about “bugs,” dated from summer 2025. They had over six months to “fix the bugs” before rolling it out to iOS users. Since they did not, I assume this to be purposefully done by a dishonest developer in order to push users to subscriptions, regardless of what they say. If they truly wanted to fix a “bug” in recognizing previous purchases, they could have done it.

Unfortunately, due to the way the App Store works, there is no way to go back to the previous version that worked fine before the developer removed the functionality people paid for.

Hi Jaws, this was a bug in v26 that prevented the app from recognizing prior purchases — it has been fixed in the latest update. No one needs to pay again. If you're still experiencing issues after updating, please visit apimac.com and contact our support team.

All features now behind expensive subscriptions IAP

Update Mar 6: still no fix from the developer. I’ve reached out multiple times on their website, but get no help other than being told they want to fix it. But it’s been weeks and it still doesn’t recognize that I purchased the app.

Update Feb 26: version 26.1 still does not fix previous purchases, despite further supposed fixes. Restore purchase does nothing. Purchase is 2019 is clearly listed in my account. iOS 18.7.2
——
Feb 25 and still no fix for previous purchase after update. No contact from developer.

Edit: still no access to any features, even after an update on 20 Feb that was supposed to fix it.

The app immediately displays the subscription/in-app purchase screen when it opens or when I try to do any action. Restoring purchases does nothing.

Whatever was supposed to be fixed did not change this.

I contacted your chat bot but offered no actual help beyond taking my email address.

Excellent customer service!

This is a very handy utility that I use for cleaning and parsing text files. I had a problem and customer support quickly responded and remedied my problem. They exceeded my expectations! Very happy customer!

Unacceptable

Update 2: 26.1, despite claiming to fix the issue with previous purchases not being recognized, still says "no active license". I'll be switching to Text Workflow, and I recommend others do the same.

Update 1: I can't update to a newer version than what is currently available on the store. The current version does not fix anything; restoring purchase says no active license, even after deleting and reinstalling.

Original review: I'm pretty sure that locking features that were previously purchased behind a newly introduced subscription is explicitly disallowed by Apple, so I'll be contacting App Store support. This is ridiculous.

Response from developer

Hi, we completely understand your frustration. To be clear: locking previously purchased features behind a subscription was never our intention and is not our policy. A bug in Clean Text 26 prevented the app from recognizing previous purchases for a small number of users. We've already released an update that fixes this. Please update to the latest version and your purchase will be fully restored. You don't need to pay again.

Already paid $0.99 previously

I have already purchased this app on 14 Oct 2021 for $0.99. It wasn’t a subscription; it was a one-off purchase. Do I now have to pay nearly $40 again to use the features? I don’t need any of the new features. I just need to be able to use the same features that I paid for in 2021. Can you not restore it?

Edit: The developer said they would restore my purchase but until now I’m still unable to. The error message says there is no active license. So it looks like they have not or are not going to fix it.

Restore Purchase not working for everyone yet

I see some app reviews note that restore purchase is not working for some people. But I’m not one of those people, unfortunately. The restore purchase function prompts me for my Apple ID login, but then returns an error message saying that there’s no active license under that Apple ID and that I should verify I’m using the correct Apple ID. Yes, I am using the correct Apple ID.

Don’t buy. They won’t stand by product

I bought this app in 2017. I paid for it. Now I can’t use it when they converted to a “subscription.” Don’t stand by these people.

Retroactive Paywall

Bought this app last year because it was the only text cleaner that did not require a paid subscription. Used it basically everyday — it did exactly what I needed. Welp, I guess the joke is on me since i updated the app and now in order to do literally anything, I’m now expected to pay $1/month, $10/year, or $40 to recover lifetime access to the features I originally paid once for before the pricing model changed. Charging a subscription for new features is understandable but removing access to features I already paid for and asking me to pay again is not. Very lame.

RESTORE PURCHASES Has Been Fixed...YAAY!

I enabled the .99¢ per month 30 Day FREE TRIAL in order to use this app as I always have for the past four years while waiting for APPLE to approve the most recent update...which they have here!

It enables the RESTORE PURCHASES feature to unlock Clean Text for those legacy owners who have previously bought this app.

I immediately canceled my 30 Day Free Trial subscription. The subscription popup is gone and the app is once again fully functional.

Hi Pedro, thank you so much for your patience and for sharing your experience — it really helps other users too! We're glad the update resolved everything. Just to confirm: legacy owners don't need any workaround anymore, the Restore Purchases feature now works as it should. Thanks for sticking with Clean Text for four years!

Subscription death

Changing to subscription model made me delete the app, especially since they ask so much for an app I use less then 6 times a year. Bye
