The Mystical Experience Questionnaire, on your iPhone.
The MEQ30 is the most studied psychometric tool for measuring mystical-type experiences. Researchers at Johns Hopkins, NYU, and Imperial College London use it to assess the depth and character of experiences occasioned by psychedelics, meditation, breathwork, and other contemplative practices. This app brings the validated 30-item questionnaire into a private journal you can use after every journey.
Score any journey with the full MEQ30
Rate each item on the standard 0 to 5 scale. Get instant totals for the four core dimensions: mystical (unity, sacredness, noetic quality), positive mood, transcendence of time and space, and ineffability. See how close your experience came to a "complete" mystical experience using the 60 percent threshold from the research literature.
Log substance and dose
Record what you took, how much, by what route, and at what time. Note set, setting, and any supplements or co-administered substances. Your data, your device, your records.
Write a journey note
Capture insights, imagery, emotions, music, intentions, and integration reflections. Tag entries by theme so you can find them later.
See your patterns across sessions
The dashboard plots MEQ30 totals over time, breaks down each dimension, and surfaces correlations between dose, substance, set, and outcome. Heatmaps show which days, doses, and contexts produced the deepest experiences.
Compare and analyze
Filter by substance, dose range, or date. Compare how different journeys score in your own record. Identify a personal dose response curve. Track changes in wellbeing scores between sessions.
Built for people who take this seriously
Whether you are participating in a clinical trial, working with a guide or therapist, doing solo practice, or running an ongoing personal protocol, the app gives you the same instrument the researchers use. The MEQ30 has been validated across studies at Johns Hopkins, NYU, and Imperial College London. Having your own scores over time turns a string of singular experiences into a body of evidence you can learn from.
Privacy first
All data lives on your device. Optional iCloud sync keeps your records private to your Apple ID. No accounts, no ads, no tracking, no servers reading your notes.
Export anything
Export individual journeys or your full history as PDF, CSV, or JSON. Share with your therapist, integration coach, or research team. Keep a copy for yourself.
Who this is for
People doing intentional inner work who want better records.
Therapists, guides, and integration coaches who want a shared instrument with clients.
Clinical trial participants who want their own copy of their data.
Meditators, breathworkers, and contemplatives interested in measuring non-ordinary states.
Researchers and self-experimenters who want longitudinal data on their own practice.
What this app is not
The app does not provide substances, encourage illegal activity, or replace professional care. It is a measurement and journaling tool. Use it in whatever legal and safe context fits your practice.
About the MEQ30
The questionnaire grew out of decades of research into mystical experience, beginning with Walter Pahnke and Ralph Hood and refined by the Johns Hopkins team led by Roland Griffiths. The current 30-item version was published by MacLean, Leoutsakos, Johnson, and Griffiths in 2012 and has become a standard outcome measure in psychedelic clinical trials.
