No longer works

I have used this app for years. Now all of a sudden it will not bring up the definitions. I resent updates being pushed onto mu phone without my knowledge or approval, because they usually are not improvement. This one in particular, is a disaster, since the app no longer works at all. No choice but to delete.

Scam

This app claims to be the #1 free dictionary app but the app you get today is a completely different app than the one that got to #1.

The prices of the Power Pack (2013 — $5.99), Grammar & Tips (2014 — $1.99), and Expert English (2014 — $2.99) upgrades were almost unheard of at the time; even if they seem somewhat reasonable today. Back then, each of those upgrades individually cost what a fully paid app cost. And let’s be clear, $10.97 back then is $15.58 today. That’s still a hell of a lot for an English language electronic dictionary. And they just discontinued all those features after pocketing the money without a care in the world. And it’s not just the developer, Apple also allowed it and did nothing. We need a crackdown on app store and developer bait and switch scams. Enough is enough.

Ads

Too many ads top and bottom between wow eyes sore! I’m old fat thump on screen oh my! Slow down this ads trying to focus my reading too may distract oh my lord!
By the way xAI is way better.

still bad Aug 16 update update

The app no longer scrolls up or down on my iphone SE (2022 3rd Generation) running ios 26.6. This app is still useless! Please FIX!

Incredibly upset over the removal of the “favorite words” feature.

I had years worth of words saved in my account that had helped me shape my vocabulary overtime, only for the “favorite” feature to be terminated in a seamless instance, along with my own account. Had I at least gotten a notice in advance, I would have at least written down all the words I had saved up over an extensive period of time. I’m utterly disappointed, along with hundred of users like myself.

Where is my refund?

Saved words

Great app ruined by a poorly thought out update, removing core features which every similar app has without explanation was a terrible decision

They Took Back What Was Paid For

I would give zero, or even negative stars, if it were possible to do so in these reviews.

I had the paid, as-free version of this app for years. It used to allow you to download the dictionary database for offline use - something I found invaluable. You also used to be able to favorite and save words, and the developers in their very questionable “wisdom” removed that as well. Basically leaving an ad-ridden shell of the app I previously considered one of the most valuable apps on my devices. I want my money back at the very least, but they won’t even be doing that, you can be sure. I don’t know of the company changed hands, or what, but whoever is currently developing this app is greedy AF, even being willing to steal from their paying customers. Don’t bother with this joke of an app. It is nothing compared to what it once was. Don’t bother with this company, because they are greedy and dishonest. The fact they were able to do this and remain on the App Store is in itself an insult to every honest user/customer. What they’ve done is evil perpetrated by absolute filth.

Twinkle, twinkle, ... lost three stars ... tell me if they really are...

First of all: Thank you for creating this app. I prefer it to the other contenders (Merriam-Websters, Oxford, Collin's, etc)

Definitely already headed straight towards: A good and solid app.

A few - cumbersome and unwieldy tending towards "more than annoying" - quirks to usability keep me from giving 4-5 stars:

1) returning results as one endless page ... why not collapsed?
2) "American Phonetic" + "IPA" - nice! - Why can't you simply display both side-by-side instead of a (unnecessary and obstructive) toggle ?
3) Why can't multiple queries be held accessible for rapid switching between terms? Why is there no history or effective bookmarking?

...

A true highlight were adding crossreferencing to thesaurus and establishing rapid switching between these for language and word-smithing purposes.

Way too many ads

This has way too many ads. The screenshots are misleading as they don’t show the ads.

Developer Changed Rules

Like so many others I bought this app a long time ago, because it got rid of the annoying ads. I’m bothered because like the others I only paid so I could stop the ads—sensory stimulation of negative emotions. From a favorite app to trash. Removing it today.

bad July 29 update

The app no longer scrolls up or down on my iphone SE (2022 3rd Generation) running ios 26.5.2. Please FIX! I can no longer use this app...

i paid for no ads awhile back

when this app first came out in the age of dinosaurs, i paid a sum to remove the ads… and to upgrade certain features of the app… and now the ads are back… yay… used to be my favorite word resource for writing… 🫩

Hey, this works, but…

this is supposed to be a word search, not an ad-peddler. it's actually easier to just search on Google for a word, to not have to deal with those pesky ads…

I would give it 5 stars for it to just work as it is supposed to work: like searching a dictionary book on this app. By itself.

Does one have to watch an ad just to open a physical book dictionary?

Well, maybe this will actually happen someday, who knows? (let's find out 👀)

Doesn’t load

This app stopped working. It doesn’t load on my phone. I really enjoyed this app previously. Time to find a new one

Deleting ad bombed app

Used this app daily during the school year. No ads, easy to use, simple definitions most should be able to understand… Now the money many users have paid so as to not be annoyed by ads has just been sucked up by this company with no recourse for its users except for choosing another dictionary. Merriam Webster / Oxford / Word Hippo. There are others frustrated users can go to. Goodbye dictionary.com. I’ll return if things get fixed.

What happened

My first paid for this app it did. It was removing all of the ads, and I had a wide variety of things. Now there’s a whole bunch of apps and I have no idea where all the other things app

PLEASE READ DEVELOPERS!!!

Hi!! I LOVE this app and enjoy reading and learning new words! There is just one small thing I wish we could do! I know I love reading words and then forget them and wish I could have somewhere to look back for them! So what if you added a bookmark tab for words?! Then you can save all your favourite words! I’d love to see this added in! Thank you!

Unknown pop-up came up that wanted money

Paid features gone

I paid for many features such as no ads a while back. Just to find out now I’m seeing ads and everything I paid for gone. Is this grounds for a lawsuit ?
