Good but too limited

The monthly subscription is way too expensive and the free version is way too limited. I like this app but def not enough to pay for it. Im running out of stories to read and will prolly end up switching apps cuz i dont have access to enough things.

brilliant resource for reading practice

used with a course, this is a fantastic help for regular reading and listening practice with very good levelling/progression and a very wide variety of stories. particularly appreciate the ‘goal’ system of x times/week rather than the more oppressive streak system that so many language resources use, and the integration with pleco for vocabulary

Learning Chinese

This App is extremely useful. Used it from HSK1 to HSK4 level. The stories are fun.

Amazing too

It the best tool to learn grammes and reading and listening what i head before. i really can recommend this app ❤️

Super Efficient

The best app for learning Chinese. Definitely worth the price of premium subscription.

Great app

Super helpful for learning characters and grammar.

Honestly best app

It’s nothing glamorous. Just a book reading app. I’ve been struggling with learning Chinese on and off for about ten years or more. Sadly I had not made much progress beyond 500 words. But a few years ago I started learning some written characters instead of just pinyin at my Chinese tutors instruction. I picked up about 100 immediately and then started seeing some improvements. Those dumb apps where you just get a tiny slice of a phrase or something at a time doesn’t prepare you like this. Honestly this has been the best app that has helped me get to the next level. No I was not paid to write this I’m honestly just a happy customer who is grateful to trying something different finally

Best language learning app ever

This is by far the b est language learning app ever, not just for chinese. It is super intuitive, well made and fun to use! It is really noticeable that the stories were created with passion. Thank you to the team behind it! I wish there would be more languages

I love this app!

One thing I wish would be added to the app is a font based on genuine Chinese handwriting, as I really struggle with reading it!

This app is literally the reason I can read as much as I can, and also the reason I can read traditional characters. I really love how the stories go all the way into advanced levels. I love that I started using this app when I was at HSK1(2.0), and it’s still useful to me at HSK4. And it looks like it’s gonna be able to carry me all the way until I’m ready to handle novels for native speakers. It’s so helpful, and full of high-quality content, and the stories are genuinely engaging. The writing style of the stories is the reason the app works for me as well as it does. When I’m bored and want to open my phone, I have mostly replaced doom scrolling with just reading stories on here for a minute. Highly recommend

Best independent tool

Short of receiving comprehensible input lessons, this is absolutely the best way to learn Chinese.

Very helpful!

Fantastic

This app is fantastic!

great for “native” speakers!

For context: I’m a Chinese American youth, grew up speaking Chinese at home, going to weekly Chinese school, even took a semester of “native speaker” Chinese in college designed for ABCs like me. But I’ve really fallen off with lack of practice - while I can understand spoken Chinese, speaking and reading are challenging for me. Also, my ability to form sentences in Chinese is probably that of a child. I can get around when traveling in Asia, but would love to be able to hold conversations with more depth.

Enter Du Chinese: I found it extremely easy to jump into Intermediate Adv and Advanced readings, and get exposure to complex phrases and sentence structures. I won’t belabor the cool built-in study tools/features that other reviews have already mentioned, just that I find them extremely intuitive and helpful. I just wish I found this app earlier in life! I’ve been using the free version for about two weeks, but could certainly see myself paying for more readings in the future.

I think the one thing that would smack this app right out of the ball park, and what I would be willing to pay a good chunk of money for, is the ability to pair Du Chinese with e-books. I love to read popular sci fi, fantasy, philosophy, etc and it would be awesome to have the dictionary lookup/read aloud/flashcard capabilities with a book I’m actually very invested in. Would happily pay $20-50 for one novel.

I highly recommend this app to any ABC who wants to improve their Chinese!

使いやすい

中国語の文章を読む練習ができます。少し触ってみましたがかなり使いやすいです。

良い点
・分からない単語はタップするとピンインや解説が出てくる。
・単語帳に追加して一覧やフラッシュカードで復習できる。
・文章の読み上げ機能がある。

不満点
・アプリの言語が英語以外に変更できない

In general good, but…

Wide vocabulary, good use examples, yet for some reason the application loses the history of translations, makes learning less efficient.

Just what I’ve been looking for

After trying several different and very disappointing and gimmicky apps for learning Mandarin I’m so glad I found this. Exactly what I need to keep up and gradually improve my beginner level Chinese. The combination of reading and listening is extremely helpful and the functionality is fantastic. Highly recommended!

FOR ME IT’S PERFECT, NICE!

My favorite app

This App is exactly what I needed to boost my Chinese learning. I tried for a day or two and realised the subscription would be well worth it. Money very VERY well spent

Please fix the new design.

I am a longtime DC user and have been a happy subscriber for over 2 years, with almost 2500 lessons completed in the app. So it’s safe to say that I love the concept and the old app.

The recent redesign, however, is both uglier and more difficult to navigate than the old design. These bring my rating of the app down a star or two. If something isn’t broke, don’t fix it!

1. I do not want to set a weekly goal, and as a user, I want to be able to get rid of that from the very top of the home screen if I am not going to use it.

2. Under the “read” tab, new stories and articles are difficult to find. I used to enjoy reading new lessons as they came out, but now I cannot unless I go into each of the three mini sections (Stories, Articles, and Courses) and individually check each one. It’s an added, unnecessary step that creates friction in the user experience. Please separate the new lessons from the “Picked for you” section and put them back on the main page of the Read tab. It would not be hard to have three sections on the main Read screen: New, Picked for You, and Popular Articles.

3. Keywords feature is completely pointless for me, since this is a graded reading app (where you shouldn’t need to pre study for lessons) that already offers a built in dictionary and flashcards. It seems like the whole app was redesigned just to push this feature, which is still being voted on.
