The accuracy is almost always within a dE of 2, which means 'small difference apparent to the trained eye', as tested on many, many colors in a wide variety of (natural/window!) lighting conditions. It would be good to know what happened in your case - could you please reach out to support@findpaintcolor.com to get to the bottom of this? Following the App Walkthrough video at findpaintcolor.com is a good way to confirm the app is being used correctly....

Hi LentleSoup: Thanks for taking the time to review - appreciated. Sounds like you were trying to get a color match for textured pine wood, and yes that could be problematic: the grain of the wood is variable in color, and the texture can create shadows and bright edges if it is lit from the side. The app will average this all out to come up with a color match, but a solid single color of this average can look pretty different than the varied wood. However, the app can do a good job in matching already-stained or painted wood (siding for example), especially by taking 2-3 readings in different side-lighting.

Also the apps identifiers for paint chips/colors seem out of date (for behr anyway)

Hi ts1138: FindPaintColor has a usual color accuracy of dE of 2.0 or less, which means 'a small difference, apparent to the trained eye', and this has been confirmed by extensive testing on a wide variety of paint chips and actual paint, including Behr', under varying conditions. Typical results are shown visually at findpaintcolor.com. If you could reach out to support@findpaintcolor.com to figure out what is different about your experience (and also discuss which app identifiers were problematic), that would be highly appreciated, in the spirit of continuing app improvement. As mentioned on the Product Page and Web Site, FindPaintColor does require one of the specified white Chips listed (so it can achieve high accuracy), available free at your paint dealer, or also available free by mail from one major paint vendor, as described at findpaintcolor.com. The app is wide daily successful use, so although it is a bit of a pain to get the white chip, this does pay off in delivering accurate results without the need of an external color sensor.

Although the app is in wide daily use, and others find it straightforward to use and accurate, a few folks have difficulties, and it would be great to understand this better with a view to continuing improvement. Instructions are easy
I used 2 different paint swatches and took images in about 6 different areas. I didn’t get the same 1 2 & 3 color recommendations each time, but my ceiling has knockdown and creates small shadows everywhere. I counted all the colors that showed up in the top 3 recommendations.
The color that showed up the most times ended up being 100% accurate.

Thanks so much for providing this nicely-detailed feedback. Taking multiple measurements, especially on textured surfaces with side-lighting shadows, is a very good suggestion. The app does not hassle for reviews, so it is highly appreciated that you took the time to provide this.
Cool idea, sadly did work
However, I rated it low because the color match was not sufficiently accurate. It makes sense that a standard color swatch would help calibrate the process. So, I got the standard white swatch from Benjamin Moore as well as a few sample paint chips to test against. For the ones I tried, the proposed match list didn’t include the actual color name which was on the chip. Because of that misalignment, I cannot recommend even tho the idea has merit.

Hi spoonbls: Thanks much for taking the time to provide this feedback. While it can happen rarely that the match list does not include the actual chip name (for example, for Benjamin Moore's 'Tapestry Beige' there are over 20 highly similar colors, that are nearly indistinguishable from each other, and that the app might judge them all to be a slightly closer match), but it is not likely that this would occur on multiple paint chips. Testing of the app on a wide variety of Benjamin Moore color chips and paint samples shows accuracy in the dE less than 2 or so region, which means 'a small color difference, apparent to the trained eye'. So the app is pretty accurate in extensive testing. So, there seems to be some other issue at play here. Would you be able to be in touch at support@findpaintcolor.com to help figure this out, and also to explore your eyedropper tool idea? Thanks in advance.. Larry

The automatic align function in the app is usually reliable, but if not (e.g. on very white colors), as mentioned in the app's simple Help page, you can pan/zoom manually to easily get things aligned, as shown there. Please be assured that if you do this, and follow the simple instructions, the app provides good accuracy, as others confirm. And the app is in wide use by thousands of users. Hi Btl1964 Both the App Store Product Page and the Web Site prominently mention that the app requires use of a (free) white chip from your paint dealer, which is vital to achieving high accuracy without the need for an external color sensor, and specifies a choice of which white chip to get. Sorry you somehow seem to have missed reading this. If getting one of these white chips is a 'bridge too far' in your case, you can apply for a refund of your $2.99 from the App Store. Worth mentioning is that FindPaintColor is in wide and growing daily use by thousands of users, with a refund rate way below 1%, and delivers good accuracy.

It is being used in this manner by thousands of users. No knowledge of color profiling or anything else technical is required - one just needs to follow the few simple steps shown in the app, and as also shown in the brief App Walkthru video at findpaintcolor.com. But it does NOT accept uploaded photos, because this would not allow accurate color matching. Would you be able to indicate the search method that lists FindPaintColor as a top result for 'color matching photos'? The usual popular search engines do not ....
It really works.
I emailed the builder’s rep for our development to ask him what brand and color pain they used. I hadn’t heard back from in for a few days so I downloaded this app.
When using the app, I determined that my color was SW 7008- Alabaster. I went to Lowe’s yesterday and bought a quart and it’s a great match. Then today I finally heard back from the builder…they used SW 7008- Alabaster!
I thought the app was very intuitive and easy to use, and most of all….ACCURATE!

Hi LuckyGirl: FindPaintColor works only by taking an in-app photo with a known white chip, as the Product Page says, so it can provide accurate color matching by measuring ambient light. It is intended for those needing an accurate match, but not wanting to invest in an external colorimeter. There are solutions that work from an existing photo, but they can only provide an approximate guess as to the color. Thanks for taking the time to review.

As per the previous comment, FindPaintColor is not intended to work with external photos - and works only with photos taken within the app with a known white chip (as the Product Page says). This allows it to measure ambient light, as required to achieve high color matching accuracy with the iPhone camera, without requiring an external color measurement sensor.

It is unfortunate that FindPaintColor did not meet your expectations, but the Product Description says clearly that it works by taking in-app photos (and that is how it achieves the high accuracy that it does). And correct - it is not intended to work with photos taken outside the app. Although a small fraction of folks (way less than 1%) have had issues, please be assured that FindPaintColor is in wide daily use across North America, accurately finding the closest standard paint colors without the aggravation of finding matching color chips or bringing in a sample, and used by more and more people every day (thanks!). The 3 minute video on findpaintcolor.com gives a good idea of the app in use, and typical accuracy.
