Great app and support

This app allows me to keep all my exported ancestry.com tree info without a monthly fee. Also, couldn’t figure something out, and support helped me solve my issue overnight.

It will hold all my lineage research …

… but moving around is slow and cumbersome, and so is looking for individuals with common names. There is no going back to a previous screen - the complete search must be resubmitted if moving beyond two generations of the same family. Moving among families who used the same first names (such as my Holley who used James, John, Richard, and Sion) and seldom middle names can be a couple of screens depending on font. The good part is they are all there and the family connections were kept from the GED file, as were the sources and Notes from my Legacy file. That is a great help. For iPhones, this is a help.

Awesome genealogy app!

I have been wanting a way to view my genealogy info from my iPhone, but most apps are overkill or are for online services. GedView is exactly what I was looking for! I export GEDCom files from Ancestral Quest (with photos embedded) and open them in GedView and it works beautifully! I can also download GEDCom files from Ancestry.com and use them in GedView. Perfect for my needs!

No it isn’t buggy, it’s Perfect.

Not quite sure why previous reviewer has criticised it for being buggy…if you are unsure and don’t know how to use it, read the manual first before criticising it. This is simple perfection. You can enter as much or as little as you like, no unnecessary boxes, bells or whistles. No it doesn’t automatically fill everything for you, you have to do the work, no automatic source generators here 😂 .. learn genealogy correctly from the start and this little gem, that packs an awesome punch will see you right every time.

Loads of bugs

I am very disappointed in this app. Full of bugs on the iPad version. Input is not intuitive and unforgiving if you make a mistake. For example if you link the wrong parent to a child by mistake (easily done if the same family name repeats) you cannot delete the wrong name and add the right one. You create a second mother or father! Names disappear. Reports don’t work - pedigree reports continually close the app when you try to run them. Save yourself a fiver. This is a total waste of money.

Wonderful

I like the app even tho it cost money I have fun doing that thank you for creating it

GED view

I have used this app for years, it is something my whole family and members of my tree download so they can see the new changes and deletions of their ancestors. Once a week I send a ged file so it can update. I use it when out and about for my notes and when I visit old graves. Instructions are easy to understand and use. It is a wonderful app, I would even pay for it.

Disappointed

Followed the instructions on exporting , it just hangs.

Super app

This is money well spent on a very good family tree app. Very pleased with it.

Awesome

My old viewer died and I needed a new viewer on my iPhone for my GEDCOM file. Uploading the GEDCOM file is easy. The author will respond to your question(s) very timely. BTW, my GEDCOM file is 13 years old and an older format. This app read the file with no problems.

Best !!👍👍

Excellent tree app, for my iPhone and iPad. Professionally done and very easy to use. I've never had any problems with it, yet it continues to be updated and improved regularly. Great tech support.😃👏 Beautiful update ! Thanks.

Cannot Recommend Enough!!

I was looking for an easy way to transfer my current family tree (from Heredis 2022 for Windows), plus all the sources and images associated with it, onto a mobile app. The Heredis mobile app was not up to the job, as it does not include the sources, their images and transcriptions on the uploaded data. This does the job perfectly - nothing is missing! Plus it is in an easy to use and pleasing interface and you can view information in so many different ways.
To transfer the GEDCOM file with its associated images, you just need to have the images in the same folder as the GEDCOM file, and then convert this to a zip file. Then this zip file can be uploaded to your device using Wi-Fi or by several other methods.
This will allow me to carry the most recent complete copy of my family tree around with me - incredible!
Well worth the few pounds this costs.

Absolutely wonderful.

Been using it for years. Can’t thank you enough for your making it available. PS: Operator error is the obvious reason that the few lunkheads didn’t like it. DH Northern Michigan.

Total waste - Cannot view gedcom files

One would assume with a $5 app called “GedView”, that viewing gedcom files would be a function of said app. Don’t bother.

Response from developer

If you have a problem opening a gedcom file contact support.

Drops Name Fields Without Warning

2nd attempt to submit a review: much more abbreviated this time. Neither this app store profile nor the gedview web site provide a clear description of what the app actually does.

The gedview app doesn't operate directly off the ged file. Instead, it converts the content of your ged into a new database, then no longer uses the original ged file. In the process of conversion, it dropped the middle name field content of my ged file, leaving the new database with ambiguous, corrupted data with first names and surnames, only. Since there's no log file created nor warnings issued about dropped or ignored data, It is impossible to know what else is ignored by the attempt to translate the ged file.

It was a waste of $5 just to find out its limitations. The resulting database is worthless and can't be trusted with my ged files. I've deleted the app.

Just get a good iOS-based family tree app like MobileFamilyTree that handles multiple versions of ged file formats for import and it provides a rich functional interface with FamilySearch's global genealogy database. it is functionally much, much more robust.

Gedcom has no concept of a middle name, if an app supports one it is using a non standard extension, while GedView supports many of these extensions it doesn't one for middle names.

Love It

I created my family tree on my pc using Family Historian. I was looking for an app to transfer it to my iPhone. I found Ged View and it is exactly what I was looking for. I was amazed at all the options for uploading my tree. Since my computer and phone are on the same home network, I choose to upload the files directly from computer to phone. It worked flawlessly! I couldn’t believe it but all 1487 people were there with all the family links in place. All 647 photographs were there and properly linked. Now I have my family tree in my pocket with photographs. I am very happy!
The only reason I didn’t give five stars is because of one flaw I found. When I am looking at a photo and rotate my phone to horizontal, it skips to a different photo. I hope they fix that.

Worthless

Number one issue: this app does not have a tree view, just a list view. I bought and downloaded this app to allow me to view and edit GEDCOM files so I wouldn't have to completely reconstruct a part of my family tree in order to share it without exposing more than just one branch. Unfortunately, this app does not allow for trimming branches, you have to go in and delete families (actually, one couple and their children) one at a time or remove people individually. I may as well start a new tree from scratch and reenter everything! This app is utterly worthless.

Individual branches can be shared by exporting a specific bookmark group. You can then chose to either export only those bookmarked or x levels of descendants and/or ancestors.

Greedy Ancestry Answer

This program works as described, is very easy to use and has a great manual. Ancestry dot com is getting too greedy, I had occasionally bought a subscription to get extra info but mainly used it without. Now they bombard you with advertisements. Downloading my Ancestry data to My Files on my iPad and GedView uploaded all 3,200+ records seamlessly. I'm a retired software developer and I am not easily impressed, but GedView impresses me. Thanks, Tuffsy.

Poor Import

The program doesn’t to be able correctly map people from a GEDCOM file. I’ve tried using a file from my computer software program and also from the ancestry.ca site with still finding people combined and looking like it’s one person. Maybe I’m doing something wrong ☹️

Practical

I’ve been using this for years and it’s been good for me
