About

GPS-location-app records walking, running, cycling and riding workouts with detailed route tracking on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. It keeps recording where satellite positioning does not. In tunnels, underground car parks, streets between tall buildings and other places a GPS fix is lost or turns unreliable, Velocity Mode carries the route forward from the motion sensors — speed from how the vehicle vibrates, direction from the gyroscope and magnetometer — and rejoins real GPS automatically the moment a usable signal returns. It starts from the last speed actually measured, so the track stays joined up rather than restarting from zero. Velocity Mode is documented rather than asserted. Settings contains the full method, the equations behind it, and the measured error across 23 instrumented journeys — including the cases where it does not work. A complete paper is readable inside the app. FEATURES • Live route tracking during workouts, on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch • Velocity Mode: keeps recording through tunnels, car parks and weak signal • Automatic handover — no need to switch anything on mid-workout • Workout map with historical route browsing and road alignment • Distance analysis by week, month, year and all time • Daily and cumulative charts for long-term progress • Heart rate, calories, pace, elevation and split tracking • Apple Health integration for workouts and distance • Optional diagnostics logs — the raw sensor data behind every accuracy figure HONEST ABOUT ITS LIMITS Velocity Mode is an estimate, not a substitute for GPS. It is accurate to within a few per cent on open roads and much less so at walking pace, in a hand, or on a motorcycle with the phone in a pocket — a case where it does not work at all. Aircraft speed cannot be recovered without GPS. All of this is measured, written down, and shown in the app rather than hidden. Built for people who want more detail than a basic workout tracker, while keeping recording simple and fast.

What's New in GPS

1.3

September 4, 2026

• Velocity Mode now takes over when GPS degrades, not only when it disappears. Under partial cover — a long tunnel, a covered ramp, a street between tall buildings — fixes keep arriving but are worth little. The route now hands over after twelve seconds without a trustworthy fix, carrying the last measured speed so it stays joined up. • Fixed a speed readout that showed 0 km/h while genuinely moving. Speed was worked out by differencing two positions, which needed a guard against noise, and that guard wrote a hard zero at low speed on perfectly good GPS. Speed now comes from Doppler, which is measured rather than inferred and is accurate at walking pace. • Two new settings. Velocity Mode can be limited to when the workout is on screen if you would rather have the battery, and the per-workout diagnostics logs can be switched off if you would rather have the storage. Routes record identically either way. • The paper is now readable in the app and updates on its own, so corrections and new results arrive without waiting for an app release. A copy still ships with the app and works offline. • Added a new measured failure: on a motorcycle with the phone in a pocket, the estimate carries no speed information at all. It is written up in full rather than left out. • New app icon. • Removed the road-alignment API key. Road alignment still works — it now always uses the OpenStreetMap path that was already the default.
