User reviews

Headset Support

You must have a supported headset or results purportedly may be inaccurate. Not going to buy a headset just for the test. I suppose the only way to find out is to download the app. Shame because I would have placed a greater degree of confidence in this test versus others available.

Response from developer

Dear User, thank you for sharing your feedback. We are actively looking into adding support for more headphone models, but we are unable to provide a specific timeline at this time. Rest assured, our team is diligently working on this, and we appreciate your patience. Stay tuned for future updates! Best, Hearing Number Team

Does not explain

Terrible job at explaining what the number means. I had to ChatGPT it. Fails at the core mission.

Response from developer

Thanks for your honest review. We appreciate you pointing this out. Best, Hearing Number Team

Never recognized my headphones

I don’t have Bluetooth headphones and even though I can effortlessly use my Bose headphones with my music and podcasts this app would not believe I was connected to headphones. Big miss.

Response from developer

If the app does not recognize Bluetooth headphones, please follow these steps: 1) Reconnect headphones.
Go to Settings -> Bluetooth, then disconnect and reconnect your headphones. 2) Test headphones.
Play music or a video through a different app. Check if you can hear the sound through the headphones. 4) Check other connections.
Make sure your headphones aren’t connected to another device. Turn off Bluetooth on devices that might be connected to your headphones. 5) Restart the app.
Close the app completely and then reopen it to refresh the connection. If you need more assistance, please contact us at support@hearingnumber.org.

$350 headset not supported.

It seemed to have worked well. Minus not supporting my headphones. I first tried some Beats but mine weren’t on the list, so I went to grab my Corsair Virtuoso Max and they also weren’t supported. It wants your mic turned on and detects you breathing as a loud noise. Could be accurate but it holds your headset against you.

FAQ

What does the Hearing Number app do?

This app helps you learn your Hearing Numbers, which represent the softest sound you can hear in each ear. By understanding these numbers, you can take steps to protect your hearing and improve your ability to hear and communicate, especially in noisy environments.

How do I use the Hearing Number app?

You will need headphones and a quiet space to complete the test, which takes about 5 minutes. The app measures your hearing levels at four different frequencies in each ear and provides your unique Hearing Numbers. You can then use this information to track your hearing over time.

Is the Hearing Number app free to use?

Yes, the app is completely free to use. It does not have any advertising, in-app purchases, or product recommendations, allowing for an uninterrupted experience focused on your hearing wellness.

What are Hearing Numbers and what do they mean?

Hearing Numbers range from -10 to 100 decibels (dB). A higher Hearing Number indicates that sounds need to be louder for you to hear them, which can make it more challenging to hear and communicate in noisy settings. The app helps you understand your specific numbers.

When should I consult a healthcare provider about my hearing?

While this app is for wellness tracking, you should consult a healthcare provider if you experience ear pain or ringing, dizziness, ear drainage, sudden or fluctuating hearing loss, ear injury, or a significant difference in hearing between your ears (more than 10 dB).
