I wasted money on this app
I am livid. $13 for VIP. I set my privacy settings so that only people that speak the language I wanna learn would see my profile. Yet, I get messages from every other language except the one I want to learn! I also blocked certain countries and still get messages from people in those countries! I rarely get messages even though I post on Moments. I have a recent profile pic where my face is visible. I interact with posts by liking and commenting. Yet I rarely get profile visits much less messages. Then out of the few messages I receive, maybe 1-2 are from speakers of the language I wanna learn. I could’ve spent those $13 on something else! I know for a fact this app has shadowbanned me or something. Which is insane considering I paid $13!!!! I am so frustrated!!

Creepy dudes and marketing
If you’re a man all you see are thirst traps and men commenting “Check your DMs”. Addictive design for the male brain. Like 10 taps on grey/obscure text to delete. Lots of strange messages from HelloTalk via email saying “come back, we miss you, etc”.
Too many notifications and questions. Pay to actually use. Can’t uninstall properly.
First off after being asked a million questions and verifications you get to the end and you have to pay to use. Secondly you can’t simply uninstall from your phone. Thirdly many useless notifications and welcome messages from the app. Horribly designed app, but great concept though.

Stay greedy, HelloTalk
I’ve never written a review for anything, but I could not let this slide.
I just signed up today and within a couple of hours, access to key features were revoked. Why? Apparently due to “unusual activity” that the “Team” refuses to specify.
I have a simple profile with only the minimum necessary info - this is the Internet after all and I’m careful about what I share. I spent no more than an accumulated hour listening to some people talk in voice rooms and live. I hadn’t even tried reaching out to people yet or leave comments. None of my activity violates terms.
In order to regain access and “verify” my identity, they demand that I provide a VIDEO of myself explicitly saying certain pieces of info. Um, no. I did not consent to use of camera or microphone at sign up. They say FACE AND VOICE must be shown, otherwise rejected. There’s a serious violation of privacy here.
How is this a solution anyway? How would you verify that the face that I have is the user without violating privacy further and asking for a birth certificate? And all this for what? Activity they say is unusual but has just been normal use.
Here I was hopeful to find meaningful connections through language exchange. It’s unfortunate that with HelloTalk being most people’s top choice for language exchange, I had little choice but to try and use it too. This experience though has been appalling and alienating.
Stay greedy, HelloTalk.
(They let reported VIP members get away with violating terms of conduct).
