App is bad, science is good

This app really is not for drummers. The interface was designed by a PhD to teach theory—not to actually tune a real world drum kit. Even when you create your own drum kit the interface doesn’t really provide anything more than just a list of your drums and what’s listed doesn’t even interface with the actual tuning mechanisms, and doesn’t even consider tuning a top and bottom head differently. You can use the tools to tune each drum head top and bottom differently but this app doesn’t assist you— it just gives you access to the tools and you would have to decide how to do that.

Everything about the app is just awkward. I just wish the owner would’ve teamed up with some drummers that had a lot of experience developing interfaces for applications.

This app should have two buttons when it starts Standard Mode and Advanced Mode. Standard mode you would create your drum kit and all of the tunings would then be activated from each drum on your kit. From there the app should make some recommendations based on your style of music. Then you would click on one drum at a time and it would walk you through the tuning process using the different tools, starting with the top or the bottom head.

Bottom line, the science is there, the app is not.

Hi there, we've spent the last 12 months developing a much improved user interface and built-in guides to help you learn interactively about drum tuning and using the app. This new version launched TODAY (Sept 15th 2026). Please go and download the new free upgrade and check out all of the features. There is still the drum kit designer, presets and all the user guide info you'll need to get started with the app. Our detailed Learn Drum Tuning course is all linked in the app too. It takes time, start at the beginning with the course and you'll start to understand drum acoustics and become proficient with the app, and you'll improve your hearing skills at the same time too. There is some bad science out there on the internet, for example, the two drumheads work together to create the pitch of the drum, they are coupled and cannot be tuned independently, they ALWAYS influence each other. This makes it challenging to tune the resonant head, there's no easy fix, but if you follow the tutorial on the resonant drumhead, you'll, start to learn how drum acoustics work in reality and you'll begin to take control. Don't forget, you can always email us for help, and we'll get you up and running with the app in no time at all.

No use for congas

Great tuner. I was struggling to tune my congas for first couple of hours before I realised my hand’s proximity to the mic on my iPhone was affecting the reading. Hold with phone’s mic unobstructed and near lug and it works great 😊

Inaccurate readings and tedious UI

This app is not very easy to use. To reset the lug tuning function you have to exit back to the menu and go back in, which would be fine and good if it didn’t misread constantly. It was consistently giving me readings hundreds of cents above the actual pitch.

Just watch the YouTube videos

I don’t know what other users were expecting going in blind to the app. Watch a couple of the YouTube videos and decide if this app will work for you. Takes about 30 mins watching the vids on tuning the snares, reso, and some of the apps features. The app works and is packed with a lot of very useful and well researched information. A lot of bad faith reviews or people who were expecting the app to actually tune their drums for them.
I feel way more confident tuning my snare and know it sounds way better now. 10/10

Drum Tuner

I don’t leave alot of reviews but I felt compelled to leave one here. This tuner is legit. A lot of people are leaving bad reviews because they don’t know what they are doing or they are not reading instructions. The first time I used this app it took me hours. You have to have consistent hits and you have to hit in the same spot. Once you realize this, it works very well. The developers have put alot of tutorials and instructions in this app. If you purchase this app and try to use it without reading, then you’re going to think it doesn’t work. The app is worth more than what it costs. Thanks

I was really hopeful but the app doesn’t seem to work

I have tried multiple times to use the app but, the user interface is not intuitive and the frequency readings and tuning features don’t work.

Not a bad app but the lug tuning picks up the sound of the previous lug note and adds it to the next one.

Inconsistent

This is ok but not great. I usually tune by ear and then use this to fine tune the lugs. Even then it’s very hit or miss. Even without adjusting any of the tension rods you can go around them several times and get completely different results. In short I would not rely on this. As a test I used lug tuning and tapped the same lug 10 times. I got 10 different results! Shouldn’t be!

Hi there, it sounds like you’re not using the app correctly or there’s something wrong with your setup. We can help you resolve this and get very accurate results! Also it’s worth understanding a bit about the different frequencies that drums give off, in order to tune accurately and to get good results from the app. Drums give off multiple frequencies at the same time, and depending on where and how you hit the drum, those frequencies are excited by different amounts. Equally the positioning of the microphone is critical too when measuring frequencies. If you follow the course that accompanies the app at www.learndrumtuning.com then you will be able to get very accurate results and you’ll learn lots about drum acoustics too. This is a great app for tuning my drums. After several years it just stopped working. I considered getting the extra features they offer but am now afraid that nothing will work?? I have requested assistance. Back to TunBot for now.

Killer App

Just the research and information they’ve put into a nice, organized place with videos and diagrams is worth the $10, which by the way, is the price of a fancy coffee or craft beer. Take the time to study this information and the app will be an incredible tool for all your tuning needs especially for lazy drummers like me. Takes the guessing work out of matching pitches. Thanks to the developer for the years of R&D put into this app!
