Konjugieren

Every verb in Konjugieren carries a frequency rank, shown on its screen and used as the default order of the verb list, so that a beginner meets sein and haben long before verdrießen. When version 1.3 tripled the corpus, the 2,582 new verbs took estimated ranks, because measuring them required permission from the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften, publisher of the Digitales Wörterbuch der deutschen Sprache, the standard scholarly dictionary of German. The Akademie has granted it. The whole corpus was queried against DWDS in a single pass, and 3,489 of the 3,572 verbs now carry a measured rank. The estimates were wrong in ways only measurement could reveal: half the corpus moved at least 466 places. Verzeihen climbs from #3535 to #1347, behindern from #2979 to #697, and bescheren from #3450 to #790, while heraufgeben falls from #919 to #3570. The 63 most common verbs did not move at all. The remaining 83 verbs are compounds for which DWDS has no entry, so they keep their estimates. The Credits article gains a Verb Frequency section in the wording the Akademie supplied, with a link to DWDS's own account of how it counts words. Konjugieren never queries DWDS itself: every rank was computed once, during development, and compiled into the app. The Terminology article's Conjugationgroup section, which explains the word Konjugieren coined for a family of conjugations sharing a tense, a mood, and a voice, now reports the answer the DWDS lexicographers gave when asked whether an established term existed. One does: Flexionsparadigma. The lexicographers themselves call it deep specialist jargon, so Konjugieren keeps its coinage. The two terms are also not the same size: a Flexionsparadigma is every conjugation a verb has, so a conjugationgroup is arguably a subset of one. The section then traces both halves of the word. Flexion, from Latin flectere, "to bend", has a native twin in Beugung, built on biegen, so German draws the bending metaphor twice. Paradigma is Greek for a showing side by side, which is what the verb screen does with six conjugations at once, and its root also gave dictionary, verdict, index, judge, zeigen, token, and teach.
