Great App + Request

Hello! I am interested in learning to speak Korean and came across this app to help in learning the alphabet. I want to directly learn the sounds of the letter without romanization, and the app is great at this however it only has one voice for the letters. I tried changing my voice in Settings but it did not change anything in the app, and so I wanted to request if you could add a way to get a male voice to say the letters. Besides this the app is great!!

Response from developer

Thanks! Glad to read that Hangul is helping you! I Will look into your voice suggestion for a future app update :)

More like benkyo but a good guide to writing Korean

I like the ability of everything from quizzes to the word chart and detailed pronunciation. I do think that this should’ve been more like benkyo since benkyo has vocabulary and builds off from learning the alphabet in the app itself. I see that you have a separate app for the Japanese alphabet but benkyo is the best structured app that you have in order to learn Japanese words and the alphabet and would like a similar one for Korean. Anyways good starter app for anyone who wants to learn Korean.

Informative and simple

I am learning Korean through a different source, but this app is perfect for just straight practicing Hangul itself. It’s simple and straightforward and doesn’t force me into a specific learning method or routine. Instead it provides lots of information on each part and gives some options for practice (flash cards, writing, etc.), however works best for me. Plus it gives some nice little facts to help me understand better! Thank you for this app, I will continue to use it!!

FAQ

What is Hangul?

Hangul is a dedicated Korean learning app focused on the Korean alphabet (Hangul). It includes over 1,671 TOPIK I vocabulary words and 84+ grammar patterns, all enhanced with spaced repetition, native pronunciation audio, and handwriting practice.

Is Hangul good for learning the Korean alphabet from scratch?

Yes, Hangul provides a comprehensive lesson on the Korean writing system, covering its history and syllable formation. The interactive Hangul Composer allows users to build Korean syllables step-by-step by combining consonants and vowels.

Can I practice writing Korean characters by hand in Hangul?

Yes, Hangul features a draw practice mode with animated stroke-by-stroke guides. It also offers multiple Korean fonts for reference and visual guides like a 9-grid overlay for accurate character positioning.

Does Hangul use spaced repetition (SRS)?

Yes, Hangul utilizes a custom SM2+ spaced repetition algorithm that factors in both accuracy and response time. A visual chart helps users track which items are overdue, due soon, or already well-memorized.

Does Hangul have Korean pronunciation audio?

Yes, Hangul provides Korean text-to-speech for all entries, allowing users to hear native pronunciation. This feature is available while browsing, studying, or taking quizzes, with an optional auto-speak function.

How is Hangul different from other Korean learning apps?

Hangul is exclusively designed for Korean, unlike generic multi-language apps. It uniquely combines an interactive syllable composer, handwriting practice with stroke guides, personalized spaced repetition, and a comprehensive TOPIK I database.

Can I create custom study lists in Hangul?

Yes, Hangul allows you to create custom collections to group entries by topic, difficulty, or any other criteria. You can personalize these collections with colors, icons, and notes, and then quiz yourself on specific groups.

What are the subscription options for Hangul?

Hangul offers several PRO subscription plans, including weekly and monthly options, with free trial periods ranging from 3 to 7 days. Pricing varies from $2.99 for a 7-day plan to $19.99 for a yearly plan.
