Don’t bother
Fortunately this fine little lantern doesn’t need a phone app, and arguably shouldn’t have one. But if it’s going to have one, it should work. It doesn’t. Do you want to carry a bent paper clip around with you to re-pair Bluetooth Every. Single. Time? Enjoy being told you need to upgrade firmware, then getting stuck in a loop of disconnecting, reconnecting (hope you’ve still got that paper clip!) and being told you need to update again? Then you’re in luck!

Better colour at low light. Spend some money and make a better app!
I really with you would fix this app to show the proper colours and make it so it could be dimmed and brightened all the way in all colours. It would be an almost perfect product then, it’s a real shame you haven’t updated the app to try and fix these issues, I believe it’s possible.
Lantern needed an update..
So my LANTERN needed a software update. So I started the update. Half way through it said it failed please try again no matter how many times I try it says failed and now my lantern is a 120 dollar brick.. what in the world is going on. ITS A LANTERN.
Doesn’t work
App is incredibly glitchy. Thought it was cool when I first bought the lantern, but it doesn’t seem to work any more. I can no longer get it to pair.
Known issues, not solved, WHY?
You’ve had a couple of years to improve this simple Bluetooth app. Why no firmware update? The whole reason for this purchase was for the Bluetooth. You can get any old lantern off of Amazon for half the price.
Firmware update fail bricks lantern
Do not use app if you want your lantern to work. Firmware makes light no longer work. Contacted lander customer support and they are trying to resolve the issue
App does not work
Don’t bother. Does not connect. Lantern is frustrating to use manually. Just a bad product.
Bluetooth Not Working
My Cairn XL is not connecting to the app anymore. It randomly stopped one day despite trying multiple times to sync via Bluetooth. I will admit however, when it was operating properly it was great and did exactly as advertised. Please fix the bugs!
Lantern is better off without the app
Stability: The app has randomly turned the lantern on at times. There are synchronisation issues, where the lantern is on and the app says it’s off. Dimming on the app doesn’t reflect dimming on the lantern, requiring the lantern to be turned off and on again from the app to reflect dimming/brightness.
Functionality: When trying to change the colour on the app, red appears as purple on the lantern.
Usability: Difficult to see the buttons and sliders to interact with on the app when buttons are in the “off” state. Changing the colour by sliding the colour spectrum left and right can accidentally trigger the app switcher/home button capability on phones.
Overall: An app that’s less of a companion and more of a burden to your Cairn XL (and other Lander lanterns). Best to learn to use the manual controls on the lantern when out camping.

Frustratingly hard to use
Very difficult to navigate and pair with boulder lantern.
Should have more features
Needs candle glow/flicker and maybe a continuously changing color mode or could be sweet to have the app use the phone mic or partner with Spotify etc to go along with the music….idk. Otherwise it’s a sweet lantern and being able to control/adjust remotely is pretty neat.
App does not work at all
Pls fix this is ridiculous
Hilariously bad
Guys, come on. It's 2021, how is an app this bad. So many bugs for an app with admittedly a very bare bones setup - sleep timer never works, light dimmer likes to just spike up to max brightness sometimes when adjusting, sometimes the color adjuster doesn't even match the color being shown off by the lamp.
For a company that focuses on gear made modern, I think they captured the wrong side of modern. Giving three stars since at least the lamp works very well.

Wow. App is terrible. Hardware is solid though.
First time review on App Store, but felt compelled to say that whoever is in charge of this app should probably be fired or hire someone who knows what they are doing. I’ve never had so much trouble connecting to any other ‘smart device’ in our home — not even close. I get that this is primarily just for outdoors/camping where app connectivity is not critical, BUT if you are going to market this device’s ‘connectivity’ capability as a being a competitive differentiator, then I strongly suggest you work out the kinks. Because now it’s worthless.

Super Intuitive
I used this on the Cairn XL. It was incredibly simple to set up and then was packed with features I didn’t expect. It can change the light depending on how far away you are. There is a battery saver option that turns off the light if you walk away, and back on when you return. Super simple, sleek, and useful.

Trash app or trash lander XL. No matter what I do I cannot connect the lander XL to the app. Wish I would have bought something else.
Lantern and app work well
EDIT: I previously wrote that I was having connection issues with the Lander app and my new Boulder Lantern. As it turns out, the Lantern had a faulty Bluetooth connection.
I contacted Lander’s support to troubleshoot the problems and we determined that I should replace that lantern. I did; new lantern connected immediately. I look forward to trying some of the features the app accesses.

Have to return
The product seemed useful, purchased it for over $100 just because of the battery size and the iOS app. I liked the app during the first setup, it functioned find, looked cool etc, and we came to camping trip the next day. And now, it’s somehow disconnected and I can never connect it back to my phone again. I did all the ways the instructions, the company’s YouTube videos etc suggested. I use a pin to activate YouTube, the Bluetooth on my phone is on, but no, it never shows up on the app.
If you can’t get your software work properly, why do you really advertise all those things. Yeah they might work, one day, but in theory. I feel nothing more than I wasted my money right now. Very disappointed.

Can’t get true red light via app = frustrating
One of the things that attracted me to the Lander Boulder lantern was the app’s capability to change the lantern’s colors, especially to be able to keep it on red light at night. I just tried it out, and unfortunately, I’m not able to get the lantern to show a true red color via the app. The only way I’m able to get to a truly red color is by manually clicking the button on the lantern, which is frustrating. Every time I try to swipe to the red color in the app, it is only able to go from purple to pink to light orange, completely bypassing a fully red color. Don’t know what this is about, but hopefully it will be fixed in a future update. The color selected in the app also is a bit off from the color actually being displayed on the device.
That being said, it is nice to have the ability to turn the device on and off, dim or increase light, etc.. Haven’t tried the sleep timer yet, but hoping that will work well.
One improvement I’d like to see too is a mode to continuously cycle through through all colors or a selection of them like other RGB devices have the capability of. Also, perhaps a “red light only” mode to easily toggle would be helpful. I still have hopes that this product can be improved, and I’ll update my review when it is. Also, being able to change strobe speed (music mode too?) would be nice.

Still doesn’t work right and is a struggle
My husband took the Cairn XL camping just tonight so is far away from me so it is not connected to my iphone as it was and the dumb thing will not pair with his exact duplicate and up to date iPhone no matter how many times you try. Therefore, the updated app does not make it always work as you are telling people. He is sitting there using a different lantern and not yours. He wanted to change to like a blue to not be harsh but there are not enough colors to go through in the manual switch. I like it in theory but very frustrating 🤯
