Don’t make the switch!
ModMed has been an enormous disappointment as an electronic medical record, and switching from NextTech to ModMed was honestly one of the worst decisions I’ve made for my practice. I am counting down the time until my contract ends so I can switch back.
The system is frustratingly inefficient in ways that should not exist in a modern EMR. For example, every single time I see a patient who has had a cholecystectomy, I have to manually type in “cholecystectomy” and then sort through what feels like 30 different diagnosis options. If a patient tells me they had back surgery, it is the same story. I have to freehand it into “other” rather than simply selecting from a customizable list of commonly used diagnoses. That is absurd. This is not how an EMR should function in this day and age.
An EMR should improve workflow, not slow it down. It should be intuitive and customizable. I should be able to create and save a list of my most common diagnoses and past surgical history items instead of wasting time hunting and pecking through endless irrelevant choices like I am on some kind of scavenger hunt every time I see a patient.
The reporting is also terrible. Pulling useful data is far more difficult than it should be, and overall the platform feels clunky, rigid, and far less capable than NextTech. Nearly every part of the experience feels like a downgrade.
The photo management is especially pathetic, which is almost unbelievable for an EMR that markets itself specifically to plastic surgery practices. It is beyond lacking. Even the image quality is a problem. If you use the EMR itself to take patient photos, the images may be acceptable for basic chart documentation, but when you try to use them for your website, marketing, or any other professional purpose, the quality is grainy and unusable. That alone is a major failure for a plastic surgery-focused system.
On top of that, there are not even thumbnails in the mobile app. So if you are trying to find specific patient photos from your phone, you are left guessing which images you need to open because there is no visual preview. In a specialty where photography is central to patient care, outcomes tracking, and marketing, that is not a minor inconvenience. It is a glaring flaw.
In short, ModMed has been vastly inferior to NextTech in usability, efficiency, reporting, and photo management. I would not recommend it to any plastic surgery practice that values speed, customization, functionality, or high-quality image organization.

Death by a thousand clicks
The EMR is so segmented and awkward that a single note can require tens of clicks to complete it.
Needs work
Love that the more lets me access quicker and notes easier here than desktop. SUPER ANNOYED that upgrades seem to belabor the program rather than make improvements as the name would suggest. ERx for refill not intuitive, ros not intuitive, fax at end to many steps and not a big deal for me because it does discourages me to use it which I actually appreciate because it is JUST RUDE AND STINGY to charge per sheet 15 cents per page when it auto generates like 2 minus the note. Other program do not charge for this or it is monthly bundled without per charge extra. This last upgrade to desktop also added extra steps to scanning so will see what I have not even seen yet to annoy me. Patients will not complain about the app if they are under 40 because they either have no medical problems or are tech savvy enough to know to skip it which negates the whole ros and pmh thing and the older generation will complain profusely unless they are with a grandchild that just says none on all of it soooo. I know modded has the capacity and the money to make it better without raising price so please do so. Will I keep it after the 3 year contract … I would like to say yes but last couple upgrades not sure.

I love this EHR so much. The built in content allows me to move so fast with my documentation, and I can just focus on medicine. Prior to having the system, we had all kinds of issues with our billing and denials and since moving to this, it’s been revolutionary. The staff was doing so much manually before and it’s night and day now. I can just be done and not have to spend hours every weekend catching up.

Inefficient, time consuming, generates stupid language
I’ve had the application for years. What I like about it is that it facilitates my photo documentation using the iPad or iPhone. However what I do not like is that the notes that the system generates uses bland, impersonal and borderline infantile language. It would be embarrassing and disastrous if one had to defend medical decision making in a legal setting using their cookbook chart note. Therefore I need to edit (rewrite) the history, impression and elements of the plan in order to maintain my professionalism. I do my operative notes in (Microsoft) Word and copy and paste them into ModMed. The suggested codes are usually accurate, but you always have to double check. The company does not respond to suggestions on how to improve the software, so I have given up on asking.

Useless Call Button
Call button doesn’t always pop up. Also doesn’t make an alert sound. Call button should have an audible signal not just a visual signal. Also the ability to separate office locations for call button. I.e. if I’m in location an and location b sends a call button to a group only those in location b should get the alert not everyone in location a&b.

Worse with every update
Why is it that every update for “bug fixes and improvements” create more bugs and decrease efficiency? Can’t we leave it alone already- if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!!
Terrible, just terrible
Having used multiple EMRs since 2005, I can honestly say this is one of the worst. Super expensive, clunky and totally not intuitive from a user standpoint. Oh and front and backoffice software stinks as well. This makes me long for the days of pen and paper. All EMRs are laborious but look elsewhere than this because anything is better.

Too expensive
As a young doctor who has used a few different EMR’s. Modmed is by far my least favorite. The billing can be nice but the lack of customization is frustrating. No matter how much they tell you that you can customize it with “protocols”. They are difficult to change. If you’re considering modmed, save yourself a lot of money and lot of headaches and keep searching.

Efficient and straightforward
Compared to EPIC this is way easier and way less clicks. Spend the time to correctly get trained and set up your protocols at the beginning and it is a breeze. I’m so shocked by the negative reviews. There is no perfect EMR. A kid with basic iPad skills could navigate this.
What matters
What matters is how quickly and efficiently you can get your work done. This is the first EMR that I have used, when dialed in, that I am done with my notes before seeing the next patient. It took some time to get it set and used to it, but it’s worth it for me.

Still non functional
Dr M
Let’s face it. Electronic medical records have made practicing medicine a bit more complicated. Conversely, they have also eliminated a lot of the bologna associated with paper charting. That being said, Mod Med is a fantastic alternative to many of the other record systems I have used in my career. I spend significantly less time on charting and more time with my patients and family and less time in front of the computer screen is a win for me.

Limited versatility
We purchased this MR for our sole practitioner orthopedic practice, and there is very limited individual versatility in programming. Trying to get anything repaired in the program that is either incorrect or requires a workaround is next to impossible, since they require multiple users to complain before they will even look at a problem. The program is not consistent from one section to the next, and there seems to be no reasonable application of AI.

Worst medical software
Terrible software. I would never recommend anyone getting this software
Made with poor understanding of medical knowledge
Why is there makeup on the female patient model? There are duplicate plan names for many diagnoses with different information in both, some of which are unhelpful and bloat chart notes without editing (Glaucoma patient counseling - one says contact office is eye drops cause irritation, which is silly as they all do that and there is no mention of what to contact for regarding glaucoma concerns. The other patient counseling of the SAME NAME has much more helpful information. Adding recheck IOP to the exam does not update IOP in the eye log.

Thx mod med
30 years of practice, and still independent, from hand written notes to dictation and 3 different EMR’s, yes a glitch here and there but whoever is writing a bad recommendation has no clue what one dealt with in the past, good luck trying to find another EMR to satisfy legal and billing standards and IT support, thx mod med, Derm Center of Shelby.

Time consuming, frustrating
I dread working with this program every day. The amount of clicking and loading is maddening. The fact that it is easy to make text in the impression and plan notes disappear with a click is frustrating beyond end.
This is a reasonable program if you see very simple patients, but any complexity makes creating a note time-consuming and frustrating.
The program has had the longest learning curve of any EMR I have used.
I’m 3 years in, and I continue to think it is a lousy program.

Big mistake
I fully regret signing on with modmed. Modmed was clearly made by administrators for administrators without surgical physician input. The administrative functionality is great, however the note creation, input and billing is extremely clunky. I’m extremely frustrated with this EMR and wish I had gone with practice fusion or similar.
