New Moleskine Notebooks app is unusable

The original Moleskine Notes and its successor M+ Notes both worked well. They connected to the pen and updated reasonably quickly. It was relatively easy to find a date or page.
The new version keeps telling me I have multiple versions of my notebooks and asks me which one I want to keep. For example I have one notebook labeled 2026, but a message pops up whenever I use the pen, i.e. write a word—pop up, do I want to make this my default notebook and archive the others?—write a second word—pop up, do I want to make this my default notebook and archive the others?—write a third word, same pop up. Seriously annoying.
The new app doesn’t completely update. Many pages are blank or contain only a small portion of the content that is in the paper notebook. There doesn’t seem to be any way to go back to the old app and retrieve everything that the pen wrote.
Very disappointed. Would rate it a zero if I could.

Dear Bridlewise, thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. The message about multiple notebooks is displayed to prevent handwritten notes from being assigned to the wrong notebook. If you only have one physical notebook, it is likely that multiple copies were created during the migration process. Please contact us directly through the Contact Us section in the app so we can investigate your account and resolve the issue. We'll be happy to help you get everything working correctly. Thank you.

Pretty Bad

New update to the app is quite hilariously bad. The last one wasn’t great but was intuitive and kept things in order. The only thing users want is the digital copy of the writings they make on their notebooks. But the update seems to try to be something else that no one really asked for. The data transfer is also very poor and i wish they gave me a warning in advance so I was able to have a copy of my data from the old app. I’m sure there’s work arounds for the data transfer as well but because the interface is hard to navigate you end up with lost data or just feeling really unorganized.

DearJspgl, Thank you for your feedback. Please note that a new release will be available soon, bringing several improvements to the overall app experience. In the meantime, we kindly ask you to contact us directly through the app by going to Settings → Contact Us. This will allow our Technical Support team to analyze your case and help resolve the issue as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

New update is horrendous

The original app wasn’t flashy, but reliable and fairly intuitive. The newest update has been a cluster from the beginning.

It is incredibly slow, choppy, nothing is loading.

It will not load any of the pages. Absolutely useless now.

Total downgrade

App update a blatant rip off. The old app (v2) had really quite effective handwriting recognition making notes indexable and searchable. And so properly ‘smart’ and useful compared with simple pen and paper notes. In this new version (June 2026) the default (free) recognition is total rubbish, not a single word recognised. And guess what? You can upgrade to AI powered recognition for £10 per month!!!!! The pen was £200 on its own, but it worked and was useful. I have two filled notebooks which are now effectively just paper-based. Selling my pen on eBay and deleting this. I wish it would let me give zero stars.

Getting There

App works pretty well but doesn't capture everything. The constant reminder to leave a review is frustrating and knocked it down two stars.

I need to pay to view the calendar? Very disappointed

After using the Smart Pen and being at my 3rd notebook, I had to update the app discovering that now I would need to pay for a subscription 70£ a year to see my daily events. I need to be “pro” to see the events (even the events that I manually create!) and being able to open and manage the calendar through the app. What? Is this the big improvement from the old app?

That is very disappointing for a client who has never betrayed you over the years. I understand there are management costs but I paid a lot for the set and as longstanding client that trusted this feature even if there were a thousands much better out there, now having to pay to see my calendar feels really like a betrayal!!

Dear Aerni68, thank you for your feedback. The Smart Pen you are using is one of our earliest models and was released many years ago. It was already replaced by newer generations, including the current F130 Smart Pen, which has been available for approximately four years. Unfortunately, due to the evolution of mobile devices, operating systems, and Bluetooth technology, the original triangular Smart Pen is no longer fully compatible with modern platforms. This is not due to a defect in the pen itself, but rather to the significant technological changes that have occurred over the years. We understand your disappointment and appreciate your understanding. Please reach us out to find a solution team@moleskineeveryday.com Thanks.

Holding users hostage

I cant believe the company is forcing me to sign up for a service I don't want to access my personal notes. I will not use the smart products again

Smart Pen Doesn’t Work

I can no longer use my pen. It says it’s “no longer supported”. There was nothing wrong with my pen, it worked fine. Now I have to be a new for for $200(+) or I can
No longer use my system. There should have been a notification that said to
not update the app or your older pen won’t work. This feels like a scam to get me to pay for a new pen.

YOU CANNOT ACCESS YOUR NOTEBOOKS IF YOU DON’T USE THEIR CLOUD SERVICES

The original app was never great but it worked and I could keep my content locally without using their cloud services.

This new 3.0 major update forces you to upload all of your old notes to the cloud. After updating the app, they give you an option to export your old notebooks to an offline format (probably pdf) but that option only comes up once. If you skip that export option (which I did to better understand my options later in the legacy notebook migration flow), you’re basically screwed; you are forced to upload all your content to their cloud. If you don’t upload your content to their cloud, they lock you out of YOUR notebooks.

IF YOU DON’T USE THEIR CLOUD SERVICE, YOU CANNOT ACCESS YOUR NOTEBOOKS.

In summary:
- It costs over $200 USD for their criminally mediocre “smart” pen
- NO OFFLINE OPTION: In order to use Moleskin’s “smart” notebook system, you are forced to upload your content to their cloud services.
- This is an egregious, user-hostile change to this moleskin “smart” ecosystem.

I’ll admit the physical Moleskin notebooks are wonderful. Great products. But the “smart”/digital side of the ecosystem is a scam.

We, the users are now the product. They’re going to milk us for our data and we’ll inevitably find out about a massive data breach at some point.

Do yourself a favor and avoid Moleskin’s “smart” products. I feel anything but smart for getting so invested in their garbage.

Hi pwrUs3r, thank you for sharing your thoughts. We understand your concerns about cloud sync and local access to your notebooks. The move to cloud sync was introduced to keep notes securely backed up and available across devices, while improving reliability and recovery options. That said, we also understand that some users prefer a fully local workflow and more control over offline storage. We want to reassure you that we do not sell user data, and privacy is a core part of how we design the service. We’re already working on bringing back the possibility to keep notebooks locally on device memory for users who prefer that approach, even with the trade-offs that local-only storage can involve. We appreciate this kind of direct feedback because it helps us shape the next updates and prioritize the features that matter most to long-time users. If you’d like to discuss your case directly or share more feedback, please contact us through the app Settings > Contact us or by email at team@moleskineeveryday.com. Thanks.

Nice idea but unreliable

I love this idea. I was so excited by it. I’m on my 2nd notebook. But it is extremely unreliable. The pen doesn’t work half the time. Pages are lost. Very very disappointing.

Catastrophique

Depuis la dernière mise à jour ça ne marche plus. Ça ne télécharge pas les anciennes pages ni la mémoire du stylo et ça bugue systématiquement. Une honte

Latest update, not great

Current update makes this unusable. Very slow.

Needs lots of work to compare to previous versions

The app keeps crashing, my strokes are not copying over on the app, leading to rewriting since the latest update. I’m also unable to access my previous notes from the app update to the version updates. I reached out and have yet to receive any response. I miss being able to have my notes transcribed without the need for a network connection

Absolute nightmare

Super happy until they updated software. Then complete endless nightmare.

The pen would not sync my notebook then it could not write to more than one smart notebook at the time- I had a planner a small pocket version and the regular notebooks- tech support said tough luck reset the pen and you’ll lose all the writings.

Then it lost my older notebooks. Then they said I had to block notebooks, unblock them, etc.

Total frustration for months.

I asked for a new pen so I can keep working… crickets.

Be aware

Dear Tiberius, thank you for your feedback, and we’re sorry to hear about your experience. Regarding your notebooks, it’s important not to keep multiple notebooks of the same type active at the same time. Notebooks that are not in use should be locked or archived, leaving only the active one. This helps prevent overwriting issues and ensures proper data management, as it also worked in the previous system. We’d really like to help you resolve this please contact us directly through the "Contact Us" section in the app so we can support you further. Thank you again for your feedback.

Suddenly the new app forces to create and account and send my private notes on their cloud

It looks like they decided to introduce AI features nobody asked for and charge a subscription fee for that. So, they give customers no option to keep the setup they had before: with no account and everything stored locally.

Beta

How do we sign up for the Beta?

The fact that I can sync across accounts is annoying. Additionally, this would be worthwhile if it also had a digital notebook option so that I can go back and forth between my Apple Pencil and my Smart pen.

Disappointed, after spending so much on the smart system

I don’t understand what is going on with their app, but the writing doesn’t make it cross device, and setting up an account to do so is bricked. You thus must pick either your iPhone or iPad. You can’t use the app on both. I’m super bummed out right now as it’s pretty much useless to me at this juncture. Bad development!

Avoid

It was an expensive birthday gift almost a year ago, and it never functioned as intended. I have been waiting for the promised update since, and I am losing hope at this point.
