I’m happy to report I’ve been able to add stars to my review. The new version of Notebooks, after some growing pains, supports the features I had when o bought my smart pen 2 years ago. Sync works, transcription is good even for my chicken scratch, and I’m beginning to see value again in my investment in the Moleskine Smart system.
Update OCT 22 2025
I can’t express my disappointment enough. There was a silent decision to disable sync in Jan 2025 while working on a new improved version. So far I’ve been given 4 release dates. June of 25, Sept of 25, Oct of 25, and now in a response to someone else’s comments, Nov of 25. 10 months without sync to their server, and no end in site. I purchased this and one of the key features was sync between my iPhone and iPad. I paid a premium price for what I assumed was a premium device and service. What a let down.
UPDATE July 3 2025
I’ve had to remove some stars. Several months ago, my sync stoped working. I was told at the time that they were working on a new version, and turned off the sync servers to get ready for the new product, and it would be ready “hopefully by June”
I’m disappointed that users weren’t notified that sync would be disabled for an extended time, and that there is no updated timeline for the new version. I understand there are often delays in software development, but the overall lack of communication leaves a lot to be desired. Especially when cross device sync was a key feature Moleskine announced for this product.
**original review**
I purchased a competitor’s product last summer. I had an issue and contacted support, and no response to multiple inquiries over a couple of weeks time.
I decided to purchase the Moleskine Smart system as a smart notebook is helpful in my work, and it lives up to its promise. I did have a minor issue which I’ve reported to their support, and got a timely and helpful response. I wish I bought this system in the first place.
Moleskin pen no longer supported
Response from developer
Dear Quasilyon, Thank you for your feedback, as explained during our support conversation, the first-generation Smart Pen is over 10 years old and is based on legacy technology that is unfortunately not compatible with our new platform. To help customers continue using the Smart Writing System, we have offered you a 50% discount on a compatible Smart Pen as a goodwill solution to facilitate the transition. If you need any further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us. We will be happy to help. Thanks.
Mandatory purchase of new pen
New Moleskine Notebooks app is unusable
The new version keeps telling me I have multiple versions of my notebooks and asks me which one I want to keep. For example I have one notebook labeled 2026, but a message pops up whenever I use the pen, i.e. write a word—pop up, do I want to make this my default notebook and archive the others?—write a second word—pop up, do I want to make this my default notebook and archive the others?—write a third word, same pop up. Seriously annoying.
The new app doesn’t completely update. Many pages are blank or contain only a small portion of the content that is in the paper notebook. There doesn’t seem to be any way to go back to the old app and retrieve everything that the pen wrote.
Very disappointed. Would rate it a zero if I could.
Response from developer
Dear Bridlewise, thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. The message about multiple notebooks is displayed to prevent handwritten notes from being assigned to the wrong notebook. If you only have one physical notebook, it is likely that multiple copies were created during the migration process. Please contact us directly through the Contact Us section in the app so we can investigate your account and resolve the issue. We'll be happy to help you get everything working correctly. Thank you.
Old Moleskine app was better
Pretty Bad
Response from developer
DearJspgl, Thank you for your feedback. Please note that a new release will be available soon, bringing several improvements to the overall app experience. In the meantime, we kindly ask you to contact us directly through the app by going to Settings → Contact Us. This will allow our Technical Support team to analyze your case and help resolve the issue as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
New update is horrendous
It is incredibly slow, choppy, nothing is loading.
It will not load any of the pages. Absolutely useless now.
Total downgrade
Getting There
I need to pay to view the calendar? Very disappointed
That is very disappointing for a client who has never betrayed you over the years. I understand there are management costs but I paid a lot for the set and as longstanding client that trusted this feature even if there were a thousands much better out there, now having to pay to see my calendar feels really like a betrayal!!
Achtung Nutzer des SmartPen Triangular: Betrugsalarm!!
Response from developer
Dear Aerni68, thank you for your feedback. The Smart Pen you are using is one of our earliest models and was released many years ago. It was already replaced by newer generations, including the current F130 Smart Pen, which has been available for approximately four years. Unfortunately, due to the evolution of mobile devices, operating systems, and Bluetooth technology, the original triangular Smart Pen is no longer fully compatible with modern platforms. This is not due to a defect in the pen itself, but rather to the significant technological changes that have occurred over the years. We understand your disappointment and appreciate your understanding. Please reach us out to find a solution team@moleskineeveryday.com Thanks.

Holding users hostage
Smart Pen Doesn’t Work
No longer use my system. There should have been a notification that said to
not update the app or your older pen won’t work. This feels like a scam to get me to pay for a new pen.
YOU CANNOT ACCESS YOUR NOTEBOOKS IF YOU DON’T USE THEIR CLOUD SERVICES
This new 3.0 major update forces you to upload all of your old notes to the cloud. After updating the app, they give you an option to export your old notebooks to an offline format (probably pdf) but that option only comes up once. If you skip that export option (which I did to better understand my options later in the legacy notebook migration flow), you’re basically screwed; you are forced to upload all your content to their cloud. If you don’t upload your content to their cloud, they lock you out of YOUR notebooks.
IF YOU DON’T USE THEIR CLOUD SERVICE, YOU CANNOT ACCESS YOUR NOTEBOOKS.
In summary:
- It costs over $200 USD for their criminally mediocre “smart” pen
- NO OFFLINE OPTION: In order to use Moleskin’s “smart” notebook system, you are forced to upload your content to their cloud services.
- This is an egregious, user-hostile change to this moleskin “smart” ecosystem.
I’ll admit the physical Moleskin notebooks are wonderful. Great products. But the “smart”/digital side of the ecosystem is a scam.
We, the users are now the product. They’re going to milk us for our data and we’ll inevitably find out about a massive data breach at some point.
Do yourself a favor and avoid Moleskin’s “smart” products. I feel anything but smart for getting so invested in their garbage.

Hi pwrUs3r, thank you for sharing your thoughts. We understand your concerns about cloud sync and local access to your notebooks. The move to cloud sync was introduced to keep notes securely backed up and available across devices, while improving reliability and recovery options. That said, we also understand that some users prefer a fully local workflow and more control over offline storage. We want to reassure you that we do not sell user data, and privacy is a core part of how we design the service. We’re already working on bringing back the possibility to keep notebooks locally on device memory for users who prefer that approach, even with the trade-offs that local-only storage can involve. We appreciate this kind of direct feedback because it helps us shape the next updates and prioritize the features that matter most to long-time users. If you’d like to discuss your case directly or share more feedback, please contact us through the app Settings > Contact us or by email at team@moleskineeveryday.com. Thanks.
