Great device, frustrating app
I’ve only had the Muse headband for a short time, but I’m really enjoying the technology and can see myself using it a lot. Unfortunately, the app has some really frustrating basic omissions.
There’s no search function and no way to favourite/save sessions. This makes it unnecessarily difficult to find sessions you’ve enjoyed or want to repeat. The session history is just one long list, which will become a nightmare as it grows. I was even told by the AI to keep my own index of sessions — surely the app should be doing this!
Please add basic navigation tools like search, favourites, categories or filters.
Also, I’m earning “birds” at the end of sessions but often don’t actually hear birds during the meditation. I’m not sure if that’s how it’s supposed to work.

Terrible
App is an absolute train wreck of locked premium features gated behind an insulting 1-week trial to accompany a $500 headband. Easiest return of the year. What a waste.
Updated app version doesn’t work for original muse
Need option to download older version instead of having to buy a new device as suggested - please make older version available as I really like my muse and have introduced a lot of friends to try it- but I don’t want to buy it again just because the new app version won’t work with it
Fragile, junk hardware
bloated and gamified software. edit: i didn't say it felt fragile, IT IS fragile. i threw it away like the garbage that it is.
Really Disappointing
Absolutely no customer service! First I was unable to activate my account and the app isn’t recognizing that I have a paid subscription. There’s absolutely no customer support at all except a bot and a form to fill out. Also unable to pair device. Unfortunately I have not been able to use it but not a great start!

Premium pricing misleading
in app says premium price in AUD is 39% discounted but it is the normal price ? Isn’t this unlawful in AU to made such a false discount claim ?
Deceptive feature gating
Attention : tout le contenu est en anglais. Après la première année offerte, la fonctionnalité qui permet d’utiliser une autre app de méditation (dans votre langue) en fond sonore est artificiellement bloquée pour vous obliger à payer 99€/an, sachant que les autres fonctionnalités apportées par l’abonnement sont complètement gadget. Le support (très lent et médiocre quand il répond) indique d’écouter l’autre app sur une chaîne Hi-fi si on ne veut pas payer.
Edit : après avoir re-contacté le support comme ils m’y invitent, aucune aide et aucun effort. Fuyez.

Good app when it works
The app and experience are good when it works but it is buggy and the support seems limited. Muse recently put out a firmware update that is required in order to use the device. However the app won’t download the firmware update and just provides an ambiguous error. There is no FAQ nor a response to a support request so it has effectively been useless for the last two weeks. Future firmware updates shouldn’t be required to use the device. If they are required for some reason then it would be great to have an announcement and support so that people can resolve issues.

Banditry
I have had the Muse Headband go several years, and when I came back to it, suddenly it requires a subscription to even use. Thanks for making my device truly trash.
Got too fancy
Old customer of the v1 and tried the Athena. Lasted about 15 minutes and threw it in the trash. Glitchy, couldn’t hold a bluetooth signal for more than 30 seconds. Measuring brain waves and trying to do a million things. Shame. A much simpler approach and device/app that actually works would have been appreciated. Really wanted to love it.

I can’t believe I’ve wasted my money on this
I stopped using this thing so long ago, and now that I try to use it again the app doesn’t even work. I paid for a premium membership, and I’ve never noticed anything different. In fact, it still tries to get me to buy a premium all the time. Complete waste of $500.

Not Great for Non-Subscribers
Review: 03/2026: I caved and got a subscription. It’s been very frustrating. The AI is very generic and constantly misunderstands what I’m asking for or forgets instructions. It’s as smart as SIRI and not worth the extra cost. As for peak Alpha, I fail to see how it’s helpful and hasn’t impacted my mediation practice.

App is glitchy and clunky
The app is glitchy and never tracks it’s a waste of money right now. It used to work fine but now the app is a failure.
Worst app and device scam
This is worst device an app is extremely disappointing. When device is working it just doesn’t recognize. I tested it on android. It just works fine whereas my iphone is brand new and there it just doesn’t work so frustrating and it’s results are also not reliable when my mind is not calm and energy showing it is 80% above 80% calm and when my mind is really calm and it does show my brain activities is super calm. I really do not trust the results and I do not recommend this device.

Session volume controls are gone now
For years there was an icon to the left of the pause play during sessions which allowed the volume of the birds, background, end chime, narrator, etc. to be modified. Now there is no way to customize the volume during unguided biofeedback.
Unethical Company
I have been a longtime muse user. I purchased the very first Muse, then Muse 2, and finally Muse S. I even bought some Muse 2 products as gifts. However, I don’t understand why my Muse S is no longer supported and you want me to purchase the newer model after spending thousands of dollars with your company. It’s a terrible customer experience and I can no longer support such unethical behavior. I guess money is more important to you.

Lazy Product Design
1) For some reason, no data is stored locally, meaning your phone has to be plugged in, charged, and running the app the entire time or the entire night’s data will be lost
2) The App itself will just spontaneously close mid-sleep! 😂 and boom, you have no data
3) The battery for the device lasts barely longer than a night’s sleep
4) After several sessions, the $0.20 clip they use becomes unable to secure a tight fit
5) The App talking to Apple Health also works just 85% of the time
6) When the synch fails, they don’t give a way to force a resynch! Wonderful!
7) The App’s layout and UI is one of the most poorly-designed and confusing layouts of any health app I’ve ever used
Overall, Muse gives the perception of a company that makes so much money from marketing that they don’t care about product quality— both in the app and required devices— and that’s extremely frustrating on the consumer end.
