About
A few minutes with the Stoics, three times a day.
MyStoic gives you a reading every morning, midday and night from Marcus Aurelius, Seneca and Epictetus. Each passage is word for word from a classic public-domain translation, followed by a short summary in plain modern English and a question to answer in your journal.
MORNING, MIDDAY, NIGHT
Morning · Prepare: a reading and a question for the day ahead, three intentions, one thing in your control, and three things you are grateful for.
Midday · Retreat: a two-minute pause. What is disturbing you, and is it yours to control?
Night · Review: the evening review the Stoics kept. Check off the morning's intentions and write what went well and what to improve.
Stuck for words? "Give me three" offers starters for your intentions and your gratitude; swap them until one fits.
THIS WEEK
One question for the week, ours, to answer over seven days. And a Stoic Week: seven practices in seven days, each on a passage, begun whenever you like. A laurel beside the title fills as you go.
A FULL YEAR OF READINGS
366 days, 1,098 different passages, one set for every date of the year. The same date always brings the same three readings, so next year you can see how your answers have changed.
THEIR WORDS, THEN OURS
The texts are George Long's translations of the Meditations, the Discourses and the Enchiridion, and Aubrey Stewart's translations of Seneca. Every summary is labeled as ours, so it is never mistaken for the original.
