About
Pepper teaches vocabulary in the margins of what you already read. Turn it on in Safari once and it is always there: on every page you open, it swaps a few English words into the language you are learning. About one word in 25, with no more than six new words on a page, each shown up to four times.
Only words with one clear meaning are swapped. Bank, court and party never are, because the right translation depends on the sentence. Nouns arrive with the right article, so "the house" becomes "la casa".
Tap a swapped word to see the English, and tap "Hear it" to hear it said. Words you check come back sooner; words you read straight past come back after 1, 3, 7, 16 and 35 days. Mark a word as known, or tell Pepper never to swap it.
Pause it on a site with one switch, or everywhere for an hour, until tomorrow, or until you turn it back on. It skips pages that ask for a password or a card number, and pages that are not in English.
Spanish, French, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese.
Private by design: Pepper reads the pages you visit on your device, to choose words from a dictionary built into the extension. It sends nothing about them anywhere, has no account and no tracking, and keeps your progress in Safari on your device.
Pepper is a Safari extension. After installing, turn it on from Manage Extensions in Safari's page menu (the app shows you how) and allow it on every website.
