Not free

Says it’s free but keeps popping up a paywall trying to do anything. Asking for a nominal fee to support development is one thing but it wants a MONTHLY fee or $50 one time. The only feature it seems to have over the official Jellyfin app is casting to chrome, which I can’t test if it even works well and am not buying a subscription just to check. Furthermore, this is built over a free, open source project. Honestly, kind of just seems like an easy cash grab.

I’m not paying for a app I can’t even test, get lost

Best iOS client for Jellyfin hands-down

It works over Tailscale, it works in the house. It’s the only client that plays nice with HomePods. It supports all media types, but it’s a little touchy around ebooks, but it’s still usable.

It doesn’t quite fit into iOS well, some of the touch gestures yield unexpected results.

I know the paywall is a bother for some, but this is now an essential app for me.

Devs: please keep things privacy-first; I really need this app to stay great, and to not get creepy like so many other apps have lately.

Abysmal

Jellyfin is great. Using it on iOS? Not so great. There’s a native client app for it, but it only supports Movies and TV shows, which means I need a separate app for music. That served me good, but now I’ve gotten into ebooks, which means I need another. Here’s where Phyn comes in. Got it setup and start reading my book. Great, it works, user interface is attractive. Come back, and I get a paywall. Come back again, and it starts the book all over, an I have to flip through hundreds of pages since the table of contents, which works on the web app, doesn’t work. Rinse repeat. Even if these “features” are premium, it’s a subscription or an extremely high one time purchase. If I wanted to pay a subscription to read books, or do anything that jellyfin does, I’d pay for a subscription service where I don’t have to provide my own content. I guess I’ll just use the web app in my browser. Abysmal.
