Clunky

This app does what it’s supposed to but using it needs improvement. The search feature is terrible. I ran a search for “0.25 eagle” and it returned zero results. Then tried again and it came back with only two results, both were for half ounce coins. Trying to find the most basic coins is a chore so after over a year of paying for this app, I’m leaving and will verify my gold and silver purchases through alternative means.

Without this tool, I would have accepted over $1,000 in bogus Morgans and Silver Ridge coins.

FAQ

What does the Precious Coin Tester app do?

The app helps you test the authenticity of gold and silver coins by analyzing the sound they produce when pinged. It uses your device's microphone to listen to the coin's resonance and provides results to help you determine if it's a genuine coin or a fake made of cheaper materials.

How do I use the ping test feature?

To perform a ping test, hold the coin on the tip of one finger near your device's microphone. Briefly knock the coin with another hard object, keeping the coin still while it rings. Knock it again when the sound diminishes. The app will then analyze the sound.

What do the star ratings mean?

A 2-star rating indicates a standard ping test result, suggesting the coin's sound matches that of a genuine one. A 3-star rating is a high-precision result, indicating a metal content error under 10% for silver and under 5% for gold.

Is this app free to use?

The app offers a free tier with over 600 coins available for testing. For access to over 2000 coins and higher precision results, there are in-app purchases available.

What devices is this app compatible with?

The app is designed to work on phones and tablets, utilizing their microphones to capture the sound of the pinged coin. Specific operating system requirements are not detailed, but it is generally compatible with modern Android devices.
