FP-40 owners get the worst Skoove deal

I bought a Roland FP-40 two weeks ago, partly because Roland marketed Piano Sphere as a free app, developed with Skoove and deeply integrated with the piano.

In reality, only the basic beginner lessons are free. Everything else requires a £125 annual subscription, which is simply Skoove's standard full price, offered via a 7-day trial that charges your card automatically when it ends.

Compare that with what other piano buyers get:

- Roland gives three months of free Skoove Premium with its other digital pianos, including the entry-level FP-10 and FP-30X. The FP-40 is excluded, and Piano Sphere only works with the FP-40.
- Kawai and Alesis also bundle three months of Skoove Premium with their instruments, and even entry-level Casio keyboards have come with three months.
- Skoove's own website offers a 14-day trial to anyone, no piano purchase needed.

So buyers of Roland's newest connected piano, the one marketed around Skoove integration, get less than someone who has bought nothing at all.

The app itself works well with the piano and the lessons are good. But calling it "free" is misleading when most of the content sits behind a full-price paywall.

Roland, please give FP-40 owners at least the same three months of Premium your other piano buyers receive, and make the pricing clear in your marketing. I'll happily update this review if you do.

Response from developer

Thank you for such a detailed review, and we're glad you're enjoying the lessons with your FP-40. We hear your frustration about pricing and how Piano Sphere was presented. To clarify what's included for free: Piano Sphere Basic gives full access to three courses (Beginner 1, Intermediate 1 and Advanced Classical), introductory lessons in Beginner 2 and Kids, and a large selection of songs under Songs > Free Songs. Premium unlocks the rest of the app, and you can try it with the 7-day trial, which you can cancel anytime in your Apple ID subscription settings before it ends. We've shared your feedback about FP-40 offers with the team. If you'd like to talk it through, reach us at support@roland-pianosphere.com. – Piano Sphere Team

Flow state!

The integration with the FP-40 is magic - so nice to play and learn without tapping on the phone screen
