Once a great app, but…

It’s a shame they changed it. Terrible interface. Unusable. Don’t do it.

Doesn’t work. Even after 3 updates

Good premise but for a paid app that doesn’t work, disappointing. Hasn’t worked for a month

Response from developer

Thank you for your feedback, and I’m really sorry for your experience. I understand how frustrating this must be. I can see that your 30-day trial started on 30 April and has now expired without a team being created. We are currently investigating some subscription-related issues and are working hard to resolve them as quickly as possible. If you’re still experiencing problems accessing the app, please contact us at support@subnowapp.com with a screenshot of the error message to help us pinpoint the issue. To avoid any unexpected charges in future, we recommend cancelling during the trial period. If you have already been charged, you can request a refund directly through the App Store. We genuinely appreciate your feedback—it helps us improve SubNow—and we’d really value the chance to get this working properly for you.

Great update and huge time saver

The updated version of SubNow is amazing. The basic version retains all the prior functionality, while the pro version adds player positions that are a life saver when planning a lineup for game day. I used to manage positions with a manual spreadsheet, but now I’m able to plan a game in a few minutes—with the confidence that I’m giving players equitable time on the field. Also, the option to print the substitution plan makes it easy to hand a copy of the game plan to coaches or mark up during the game. This version is a big step forward!

Lifesaver

It’s been a real ‘game changer,’ pardon the pun. Fun to use and has taken the stress out of what should be a fun day for everyone. I find myself far more focussed on the actual game… the way it should be. Thanks :)

Terrible - ignore the review history

This was a great app, and priced fairly. The recent update make it the least user friendly app available, and far too expensive. The history of positive reviews is completely warranted, but disregard them. This is not the same app now. Very sad really.

Response from developer

Thank you for your candid feedback — and I’m really sorry the new version hasn’t met your expectations. We understand this has been a significant change. SubNow has evolved to support a broader range of teams, with features like Position Management now included in SubNow Pro. However, SubNow Basic is designed to deliver the same core functionality as the previous version. If you preferred the simpler setup, you might find it helpful to turn off Positions in Settings — this brings the experience much closer to the original app. There are also a few improvements you may find useful, such as the printable rotation plan, easier handling of unplanned changes, and added control like setting a second-half goalkeeper — all aimed at making game-day management more flexible. We really value the app’s history and the support from long-time users like you. Thanks again for sharing your feedback — it helps us continue improving SubNow.

Use to be good

The update has made this app useless, lots of glitches, don’t waste your money

Response from developer

Thanks for your feedback — we really appreciate you taking the time to share it. We understand your perspective, especially if the previous version worked well for you. This update has been a significant change, and we know that can be frustrating when you were happy with how things used to be. Our goal with the redesign was to address limitations in the original app and support a wider range of teams, while improving flexibility and real game-day usability. Based on user feedback, we’ve introduced a number of key improvements, including better control over when substitutions are recorded (rather than automatic scrolling), position management, printable rotation plans, previewing game time per player, second-half goalkeeper planning, easier handling of unplanned changes, and a full preview of the substitution plan. For users who preferred the simpler experience, turning off Positions in Settings can bring the app much closer to how it worked before. We genuinely value the support of long-time users like you, and your feedback helps guide where we focus next.

Won’t refund money

The redesign of this app is terrible. I thought I was getting a free trial but I suppose because I had one before of an older version it wouldn’t let. Well, the new app is garbage and I let them know. I asked for a refund but have been ignored. When creating your team it has limited options and doesn’t let you customize it to fit your needs. Bad redesign, bad service, bad app.

Response from developer

Thanks for your feedback — and I’m sorry for the frustration this experience has caused. To clarify, Apple only allows a free trial to be used once per subscription, so if you had previously used a trial with an earlier version of SubNow, it wouldn’t be offered again. We understand how this can feel unexpected. Regarding refunds, developers aren’t able to process these directly — they need to be requested through the App Store. We’ve added a step-by-step guide in the app’s FAQ to help make this process easier. We also recognise that the redesign is a significant change, and we’re actively working on improving onboarding. Training videos will be included in the next release to help users get up to speed quickly. For previous SubNow users, the Basic subscription provides a similar core experience to the earlier app when Positions are turned off. At the same time, we’ve worked to address key limitations from the old version and introduce improvements such as printable rotation plans, planned second-half goalkeepers, game-time previews per player, and easier handling of unplanned changes.

Too many bugs & Rushed

Old app was better, no 9v9 GK, can’t change duration on when to sub just to name 2 so far I have noticed needs work please fix asap.

Response from developer

Thanks for your feedback — and sorry for the frustration you’ve experienced. You’re absolutely right to call out 9v9 support — that was a miss on our part, and it’s already been addressed for the next release coming in the next few days. Regarding substitution timing, the new version is designed to create more practical, game-friendly rotations. Instead of perfectly equal time that can result in awkward substitution timings (e.g. just before halftime). Options for time between Substitutions are designed to divide evenly across the full game. If you’re after the simpler experience from the previous version, you can turn off Positions in Settings — this will bring the app much closer to how it worked before. We know this update has been a big change, and we genuinely appreciate you sticking with SubNow and taking the time to share specific issues. Your feedback is helping us quickly improve the app.

New update

What was great about this app was its simplicity, now it’s over complicated and has removed things like halves in basketball.
Will move to another option

Response from developer

Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback. We understand your concern about the app becoming more complex. We’ve worked to keep the original simplicity where possible — particularly when Positions are turned off — while also adding features to address limitations in the previous version. We’ve also reintroduced halves for basketball, and we’re happy to add other formats as they’re requested to better support different codes and regions. That said, we recognise it can feel like a big change at first. To help with this, we’ve added a step-by-step “How to use SubNow” guide in the Help screen, and we’ll be releasing short training videos in the next update to make the new format easier to learn and highlight key features. We’re very open to feedback on where things feel unnecessarily complex — our goal is to keep SubNow practical and easy to use in real game situations. Thanks again for helping us improve.

A step backwards

I contributed to earlier versions of this app, and it’s disappointing to see the direction it has taken.

The simplicity and reliability that made it useful are no longer there, and the experience now feels more complicated than it needs to be.

Coaches need something fast, intuitive, and dependable during real games, this version struggles to deliver that.

There are newer, more modern tools that handle substitutions and equal playtime far more effectively.

Response from developer

Thank you for your feedback — and for your contribution to earlier versions of SubNow. We genuinely appreciate that, and it’s helpful to hear what you valued most about the app. Simplicity and reliability are exactly what we’re aiming for. With the new version, we’ve tried to keep that simplicity when Positions are not active — turning Positions off will make the experience much closer to how the app worked previously. At the same time, we’ve introduced additional capability to better handle the realities of game-day coaching — particularly making it easier to adapt to unplanned changes, manage rotations more flexibly, and deal with the complexity that often arises during matches. We recognise that this has added a level of complexity up front, and we’re working to make the app easier and more intuitive to use as you get familiar with it. We really value your input, especially given your history with SubNow — it helps us keep pushing toward our goal of being the easiest-to-use substitution management app that also works in real game situations.

Update

New update is trash, the old model was heaps better , grandfinal tonight thanks SubNow 😵‍💫😵‍💫

Response from developer

We’re really sorry for the disruption this update has caused — especially at such a critical moment like game day. We understand how frustrating that would be. Because earlier versions of SubNow didn’t use accounts, we didn’t have a way to notify or prepare users ahead of the change, and we apologise for that. This update has been in development for a long time, with the goal of making SubNow significantly more capable across a wider range of real game situations. We know that doesn’t help in the moment, but the intent has been to build on what worked well and improve the areas that needed it. If you’re looking for something closer to the original experience, turning off Positions will make the app feel very familiar, while still giving you some added benefits like printable rotation plans, second-half goalkeeper planning, previewing game time per player, and more practical rotation timing. We really appreciate you taking the time to share this — and we’re committed to continuing to improve from here.

Prefer the last

Not broke so why fix it. Didn’t need an overhaul. Will look elsewhere

New update is a huge regression 👎

I’ve been using SubNow for a around 3 years and it’s been great. Simple and intuitive. Clear instructions and a user journey that made sense. I have an update today and instead of incremental improvements it’s had a complete facelift. Lots of issues I’ve faced:
- There’s no 9v9 option.
- Game time is max 50 mins.
- I can only select 12 players.
- It’s clunky to use.
- The UI used to be light and fresh but now feels heavy and dark.

The whole thing feels like a huge backwards step. Very disappointing.

I wonder if any user research has been done with this because it feels like a down grade in features and overall experience.

I never write reviews or complain but I have really enjoyed using this app over the years and I hope some of the points above are taken onboard otherwise I don’t think I’ll be renewing my subscription.

Update has made app useless

Terrible since update. Can’t populate the team into the game, essentially rendering the app useless

Response from developer

Thanks for your feedback — and I’m really sorry you’ve had this experience. It sounds like you’re running into issues getting your team into the game, which would definitely make the app unusable, so we understand your frustration. We’ve added a step-by-step “How to use SubNow” guide in the Help screen to walk through the setup process, which should help resolve this. We’re also releasing a short training video in the next update to make getting started much clearer and easier. We appreciate this has been a big change from the previous version, and we’re actively working to improve onboarding and usability based on feedback like yours. Thanks again for taking the time to share this — it really helps us improve SubNow.

6 player limit in trial mode

Not usable unless u pay

Missing “Edit” button

Hi, great app only issue I am finding is that I don’t have the “Edit” button at the bottom right side of the app as shown in the video. Caused an issue in today’s game when I couldn’t make an adjustment when a player came off injured. Any suggestions?

Awesome!!

Great app! Awesome for rec leagues where equal playing time is important to kids and parents. Highly recommended!!

Response from developer

Thank-you very much for your review. Great to hear you feel equal playing time is important.

Almost perfect

The app is great and makes it so easy to manage rotations, but the edit button is missing so there is no way to make a change during a game as per the faq and instructions

Response from developer

To make a change during the game click on "Switch to Full Team View", tap on the players name and you can then select their new position (e.g. Goal, Bench or Out of Game).

Well Worth the $2.64!!!!

Stumbled upon this app after feeling defeated coaching my first game of soccer ever - who would have known how difficult it would be to try to substitute kids in and out of the game?!? And here I thought I’d be coaching fundamentals of soccer this season not trying to heard sheep lol! This app is awesome and allows you to throw away the spreadsheet that you spent 4 hours developing to make sure kids get even playing time! My only wishes? That it would be a one time fee instead of monthly and that maybe you could have an optional category for rotating offense, defense and goalie as we go up in age levels? Right now we only have to rotate out the goalie and I can do that manually but would love a rotating goalie option if you put out another version. In the same new version I think it would be awesome to be able to program who switches with who without having to hit the fast forward button the entire game before game time. I tend to run out of time during the game to do the switches but if I could switch the subs before the game without having to hit Fast Forward that would be awesome! Overall, this app is awesome and really has been a huge helper for my 1st/2nd Grade team! Thank you!
