Good Journalism. Bad App

Love the journalism but unfortunately the latest app update of The Atlantic is pretty terrible. It zaps my battery, moves around the article when the advertisements reload and scrolls slowly with glitchy movement.

Please declutter the app and focus on readability and function. (Also, the animation of spinning wheel when pages load looks terrible)

Catchy headlines

But not always more information in the text. Also a frustrating search process. Catchy promotions in ads that turn up in Reddit and other feeds, don’t match the article titles enough for the search function to find them. It’s a
Headache.

Writing is Very Good - Politics are Lopsided

While I am not a fan of the current administration and their policies, the Atlantic overwhelms the reader with anti-Trump stories. You have to dig deep to get to stories that touch on everyday American lives. When you find them, they are very well written. The level of human interest goes far beyond a couple of anecdotal stories of “victims” and tells the nuanced complex backgrounds that make issues complicated. Those stories provide the reader with another perspective. Those stories make the reader stop and think after committing the time to read long form journalism. I just wish there were more of them.

Real journalism still exists

I subscribe to a lot of publications. My favorites being The New Yorker and the NYT. When I say that the Atlantic has always the most engrossing articles even compared to those two powerhouses I absolutely mean it. The online app is especially easy to read and user friendly. Non biased straight forward journalism. Keep it up.

Love articles hard to share

Love your articles. There’s no way to share your stories with my family and friends who also have The Atlantic or can at least get prompt to download? That’s half the fun to share

Infinitely Better Than Click Bait

I have always enjoyed magazines. I have had subscriptions over the decades to a dozen or more, most no longer exist. I am 68 years old and if I did my math right I was introduced to The Atlantic 50 years ago. I recall siting The Atlantic for college term papers. In all of the ensuing decades I never read The Atlantic. The re-introduction happened on Facebook. An article, with an interesting title would pop-up and I would read it. Over a few years(?) I realized I read quite a few Atlantic articles. So I subscribed. Print and digital. I love the feel of a magazine in my hand. I also love the opportunity to type in a name and read an article from 1945. There are a few great magazines still standing. Luckily The Atlantic is one of them.

The Atlantic is great, the app a disaster

Scrolling to read articles has become nearly impossible. It appears that scrolling to an advertisement sets off a process of data retrieval that lasts several seconds, during which the text appears and disappears. Sometimes at the end I'm not on the same page of the article but toward the end. The app is using as much of my battery as all other apps combined and is the second biggest user of mobile data (I don't watch videos in the mobile network). If this continues I'll cancel my subscription because it's simply too irritating to read the articles. I have an iPhone 8 and am located in Germany. Please fix this!

Games leaving so I am as well

Had the app because you needed it for the games. They just announced Stacks is being discontinued so I am leaving as well.

Still the worst app on my phone :-(

10 app updates in the last month…and still problems persist! At what point do you just fire the developer for incompetence and find someone else to fix these issues? Y’all need to do better. How am I supposed to enjoy your wonderful journalism if your app can’t deliver it?!

Excellent journalism

The articles in the Atlantic are well researched and extremely well written. They still believe that there is one truth, not many to pick and choose from. They are a trusted anchor in our media landscape and I appreciate all they do.
David Brooks is a favorite of mine. He is a phenomenal thinker and writer.

Great content. Infuriating app

This is only app that consistently logs you out and then, after logging back in, does not recognize my paid subscription and will not let me read an article. What am I paying for? Fix this problem!!! It’s been plaguing this app for more than a year

Extremely high CPU usage

Had this for awhile and there is something causing excessive resource usage on the current version. Having it in the background for 47 mins while listening to narrated articles made my phone alarmingly warm and drained my battery 20%. There is also significant lag/stutter scrolling around in the app. Force killing it maybe helps. I think it is the audio listening interface. I expect better from something I’m a paid subscriber to

Articles trend negative

Articles are good but are generally written in a negative manner about topics. Maybe try some uplifting stories once in a while. The world is not all doom and gloom.

Woke and Whiney

Disappointed by the constant bias
I subscribed looking forward to good long reads on Sundays. Instead I’ve found almost every article heavily left-leaning, with an unusually large number focused on criticizing Trump. As an independent who actually wants to hear both sides, the one-sided coverage is incredibly annoying.

Exceptional

The news articles, the more social orientated ones - all excellent.
The perfect balance and always eminently readable.

Only one complaint

I love The Atlantic and the app is convenient. My only complaint is that I wish you had a “back button.” There are usually multiple links in your articles, and without a way to easily return to the original article, it’s inconvenient to utilize them.

Good Magazine, terrible subscription support

My subscription doesn’t expire for 4 weeks according to my Apple account. The app says I don’t have a subscription. I send several e mails over the last week. So far, nothing but crickets. No response whatsoever to my inquiries.

Don’t nag me to review your app

Always well thought out and supported

Love the depth of articles.
No “sound bites” here!

Top Tier Journalism

I have been intrigued by stories alluded to from The Atlantic Magazine by many sources. My husband purchased a subscription for me as a surprise . I am thrilled to have 24 hour access to well written news worthy journalism ! Thank you to the journalists that continue to make The Atlantic a well written publication.
