About

What’s that smell? See what’s nearby—and what other people have noticed. What’s That Smell? brings nearby facilities, public environmental records, wind information, and community smell reports together on one map. Search a city, address, or ZIP code anywhere in the United States, or start from your current location. NEW: COMMUNITY SMELL REPORTS See reports from other people over the past 7 days, with approximate locations and clear observation ages. Tap a report to see the smell type, strength, and shared emojis. Pleasant and unpleasant smells have their own recognizable map icons. REPORT WHAT YOU NOTICE Coffee, baking, flowers—or something you’d rather not smell? Record your observation without creating an account. Turn on “Smells GOOD” for pleasant smells and add emojis to describe the experience. Shared reports show an approximate location, observation time, smell type, strength, and shared emojis. Written notes aren’t shown to other users. You can remove your shared reports, flag inappropriate reports, or hide reports from a contributor. EXPLORE NEARBY FACILITIES Find industrial, agricultural, and other operations that may produce noticeable odors, including: • Wastewater facilities and landfills • Farms and animal operations • Paper mills and rendering plants • Refineries and asphalt operations • Breweries, distilleries, and food processing • Other facility categories drawn from public records Tap a facility for its name, category, address, and available environmental program information. Filter the map by category to focus on what interests you. EPA SUPERFUND & BROWNFIELD RECORDS Explore EPA-listed contaminated-land records alongside facility information. These are a separate layer for environmental context; their presence does not mean they produce odors. WIND DIRECTION & SPEED Check current wind information for additional context while exploring the map. AIR QUALITY See the current air quality index and pollutant readings for general context. It does not measure odors. SHARPER SATELLITE MAPS Explore streets, neighborhoods, and surrounding land with clearer satellite imagery. Map pins adjust as you zoom, and category filters help you focus your search. SHARE YOUR SCAN Create a shareable image of your search, nearby facilities, and your own reports. SIMPLE TO USE • No account required • No ads • No subscriptions • Search across the United States • Report pleasant and unpleasant smells • Explore public data in one convenient place Built for curious locals, travelers, and anyone who has ever wondered, “What’s that smell?” Community reports are unverified observations. Facility listings describe nearby operations; they do not establish that a facility caused a particular smell. The app provides context, not air-quality testing or a determination that an area is safe or unsafe. See our privacy policy for information about data collection, sharing, and deletion.
