Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: Moodnotes at 4.7 against Mental Calm's 3.9. Moodnotes also leads on ratings volume (11K vs 7) and iOS requirement (13.0 vs 16.0). Mental Calm's advantage is review sentiment (100% vs 65%). On price, update cadence, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Moodnotes sells 11 in-app purchases, starting at $2.99 per 7 days and Mental Calm sells 1 one-off in-app purchase. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
Moodnotes holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 3.9. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Moodnotes has 11K ratings behind it against 7, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 65% of Moodnotes's written reviews are positive against 100% of Mental Calm's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Moodnotes ships an update every 4 weeks, Mental Calm every 5 weeks. The most recent releases landed on September 27, 2026 and August 12, 2026 respectively.
