Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is rating: MassDOT BusPlus at 4.4 against FRTA's 3.5. MassDOT BusPlus also leads on ratings volume (259 vs 6). FRTA's advantage is review sentiment (100% vs 59%) and update cadence (every 2 months vs every 9 months). On price, ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

MassDOT BusPlus holds the better App Store score, 4.4 against 3.5. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: MassDOT BusPlus has 259 ratings behind it against 6, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 59% of MassDOT BusPlus's written reviews are positive against 100% of FRTA's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

MassDOT BusPlus ships an update every 9 months, FRTA every 2 months. The most recent releases landed on October 12, 2026 and September 16, 2026 respectively.
