Verdict
The clearest difference is review sentiment: Cloud Tunes at 84% against Messenger VPN's 32%. Cloud Tunes also leads on update cadence (fortnightly vs every 5 months) and iOS requirement (9.1 vs 12.0). Messenger VPN's advantage is monetization model (free with in-app purchases vs subscription) and ads (none vs shown). On price, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.
Scored on Price · Rating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings · Update frequency · Ads · In-app purchases · Monetization · Best chart rank · Devices · Requires iOS
Both are free to download. Messenger VPN sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $7.99 per 7 days and Cloud Tunes sells 4 in-app purchases, starting at $9.99 per 7 days. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
Messenger VPN holds the better App Store score, 4.5 against 4.3. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Messenger VPN has 3.6K ratings behind it against 142, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 32% of Messenger VPN's written reviews are positive against 84% of Cloud Tunes's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Messenger VPN ships an update every 5 months, Cloud Tunes fortnightly. The most recent releases landed on October 26, 2026 and October 22, 2026 respectively.
