There’s far more to Greek cuisine than gyros, moussaka, and baklava. There are gogkes, ambelofasoula, and stamnagathi! And what’s the name of that beautiful fish that the waiter has just presented for your inspection? A sargos, skaros and a thrapsalo? It won’t be all Greek to you if you have this handy app. In fact, the food scene in Greece has never been more exciting. Top chefs are creating new dishes from the country’s superb produce—its delectable pistachios, olives, tomatoes and vast range of cheeses that few outside Greece have ever heard of, and so much more. Restaurants are reviving out of old regional recipes; farmers are planting ancient forms of wheat, and there’s a boom in ingredients such as mastica and dittany that only grow in Greece. And there are things that may come as a surprise, such as Greek truffles, caviar and saffron. The Greek Food Decoder is the perfect companion for travelling and eating in Greece or Cyprus, with 685 entries, containing over 2000 Greek words (in both the Greek and English alphabets). But it’s more than a mere dictionary: there are in-depth entries for many foods, and a map that pinpoints their origins. The advanced search function, which works offline, allows you to instantly find the Greek word for almost any food word you want, and supply the English for any Greek word that you might see in a restaurant or in a shop if you are self catering, especially if you dare to venture off the beaten track. And links will help you find recipes and more information from the world’s best Greek food bloggers and chefs. Dana Facaros was 20 years old when she wrote the first guidebook in English to all the Greek islands for Cadogan guides. She has been returning to Greece almost every year since (and spent several long spells living on Ikaria and in Attica), writing guidebooks and articles for the Sunday Times, the Sunday Times Travel Magazine and other publications.

Seared identifies a cut of meat from a photo and tells you whether it is worth buying, how to cook it, and how well you cooked it. Use it at the meat counter, then again at the grill. HOW IT WORKS 1. Take a photo of a cut, packaged or at the counter, or choose one from your library. 2. Seared names the cut, the animal and the primal, and makes a Buy, Consider or Pass call on its quality. 3. Pick a cooking method and get a guide written for that cut and the equipment you have. 4. After you cook, rate the result and get a tip or two for next time. KNOW THE CUT BEFORE YOU BUY Each scan covers the grade the meat looks like (Prime, Choice or Select), the marbling, the color and freshness, the thickness and any red flags. When the price tag is in the photo, Seared says whether the price is fair for the quality. RATE THIS CUT Score raw meat out of 10 on marbling, color, fat cap, thickness and presentation, with a Buy, Consider or Pass verdict, then go straight to a cooking guide for it. COOKING GUIDES FOR YOUR CUT Grill, sous vide, reverse sear, pan sear, smoker, oven roast or braise. Each guide covers prep, the steps with times and temperatures, a doneness chart and resting, adjusted to the equipment you have. Guides are saved with the scan. RATE MY COOK Photograph your steak, brisket or chops after cooking. Seared scores the sear, the crust, the presentation and the doneness against your target, or the bark, smoke ring, moisture and slice for smoked meat. Set your target doneness in Settings, and share the score card. ASK A QUESTION Ask follow-up questions about any cut, or use the Chat tab for general questions about buying and cooking meat. The built-in Meat Mastery Guide covers cuts, cooking methods, doneness temperatures, quality, storage and food safety. Available in English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese and Brazilian Portuguese. Seared requires a subscription or purchase to use premium features, plans detailed below: PREMIUM PLANS ($2.99/week, $7.99/month, $39.99/year, $24.99/year discount): • More cut scans and score cards • Detailed and Expert quality analysis • Full scan history • More chats The $2.99/week plan starts with a 3-day free trial, and the $39.99/year plan with a 1-week free trial.
