Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is price: Marathon training at Free against Run Roster's $1.99. Marathon training also leads on review sentiment (67% vs 50%) and update cadence (fortnightly vs every 6 weeks). Run Roster's advantage is rating (5.0 vs 4.2). On ads, in-app purchases, monetization model and device support there is nothing between them.

CostPrice · In-app purchases · Ads · Monetization

Marathon training is free to download; Run Roster costs $1.99 up front. Run Roster sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $0.99 per month and Marathon training sells 2 in-app purchases, starting at $9.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

Run Roster holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.2. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Marathon training has 5 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 50% of Run Roster's written reviews are positive against 67% of Marathon training's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

Run Roster ships an update every 6 weeks, Marathon training fortnightly. The most recent releases landed on September 28, 2026 and October 23, 2026 respectively.
