Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is review sentiment: EteSync Notes at 100% against Proton Drive's 37%. EteSync Notes also leads on in-app purchases (none vs 9) and update cadence (weekly vs fortnightly). Proton Drive's advantage is rating (4.1 vs 3.0) and ratings volume (1.2K vs 2). On price, ads and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Proton Drive sells 9 in-app purchases, starting at $0.99 per month. EteSync Notes asks for nothing beyond the download.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

Proton Drive holds the better App Store score, 4.1 against 3.0. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Proton Drive has 1.2K ratings behind it against 2, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 37% of Proton Drive's written reviews are positive against 100% of EteSync Notes's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

Proton Drive ships an update fortnightly, EteSync Notes weekly. The most recent releases landed on October 14, 2026 and September 26, 2026 respectively.
