Verdict
PENN Play and GolfNut both sit at 4.7 stars, but that hides the real split: 100% of GolfNut's written reviews are positive against 51% of PENN Play's. GolfNut also leads on iOS requirement (15.6 vs 17.0). PENN Play's advantage is in-app purchases (none vs 3) and ratings volume (125K vs 10). On price, rating, update cadence and ads there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. GolfNut sells 3 one-off in-app purchases. PENN Play asks for nothing beyond the download.
On the App Store both sit at effectively the same score — 4.7 for PENN Play against 4.6 for GolfNut. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: PENN Play has 125K ratings behind it against 10, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews are what separate them: 51% of PENN Play's written reviews are positive against 100% of GolfNut's.
PENN Play ships an update every 3 weeks, GolfNut fortnightly. The most recent releases landed on November 6, 2026 and November 3, 2026 respectively.
