Basic prerequisites are a thorough knowledge of chemical and physical properties of pure components and mixtures, of reactions, and of mathematical models which, in combination, allow the calculation of a process in a computing device. Process simulation software describes processes in flow diagrams where unit operations are positioned and connected by product or educt streams. The software has to solve the mass and energy balance to find a stable operating point. The goal of a process simulation is to find optimal conditions for a process.

Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is rating: DWSIM Simulator at 4.6 against Pipe Tools's 4.1. DWSIM Simulator also leads on update cadence (every 6 weeks vs every 12 months) and ratings volume (105 vs 19). Pipe Tools's advantage is review sentiment (79% vs 57%) and iOS requirement (8.0 vs 12.0). On price, ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

CostPrice · In-app purchases · Ads · Monetization

Both are free to download. Pipe Tools sells 1 one-off in-app purchase and DWSIM Simulator sells 10 one-off in-app purchases. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

DWSIM Simulator holds the better App Store score, 4.6 against 4.1. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: DWSIM Simulator has 105 ratings behind it against 19, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 79% of Pipe Tools's written reviews are positive against 57% of DWSIM Simulator's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

Pipe Tools ships an update every 12 months, DWSIM Simulator every 6 weeks. The most recent releases landed on June 10, 2026 and September 13, 2026 respectively.
