Verdict
The clearest difference is monetization model: Statesman Journal at free with in-app purchases against Oregonlive.com's subscription. Statesman Journal also leads on review sentiment (29% vs 16%). Oregonlive.com's advantage is ratings volume (10K vs 845). On price, rating, update cadence and ads there is nothing between them.
Scored on Price · Rating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings · Update frequency · Ads · In-app purchases · Monetization · Best chart rank · Devices · Requires iOS
Both are free to download. Oregonlive.com sells 16 in-app purchases, starting at $7.99 per month and Statesman Journal sells 4 in-app purchases, starting at $14.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
On the App Store both sit at effectively the same score — 4.3 for Oregonlive.com against 4.2 for Statesman Journal. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Oregonlive.com has 10K ratings behind it against 845, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews are what separate them: 16% of Oregonlive.com's written reviews are positive against 29% of Statesman Journal's.
Oregonlive.com ships an update every 3 weeks, Statesman Journal monthly. Both last shipped on October 19, 2026.
