Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is review sentiment: Passwordstate at 100% against Microsoft OneNote's 44%. Passwordstate also leads on in-app purchases (none vs 3) and iOS requirement (18.0 vs 26.0). Microsoft OneNote's advantage is rating (4.7 vs 3.3) and update cadence (weekly vs every 2 months). On price, ads and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Microsoft OneNote sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $9.99 per month. Passwordstate asks for nothing beyond the download.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

Microsoft OneNote holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 3.3. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Microsoft OneNote has 1.1M ratings behind it against 4, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 44% of Microsoft OneNote's written reviews are positive against 100% of Passwordstate's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

Microsoft OneNote ships an update weekly, Passwordstate every 2 months. The most recent releases landed on November 7, 2026 and November 3, 2026 respectively.
