Read a menu, sign or contract in your own language: point the camera and the translation appears over the real text. Snap is a translator app for iPhone and iPad that translates camera text, photos, screenshots, PDFs, typing and speech between more than 130 languages. Read it • You see the translation drawn over the real text while you move the camera. • You pick a photo or screenshot from your library and translate the text in it. • You translate a PDF and export the result as a PDF. Understand a document • You photograph or import a rental contract, official letter or form and get a plain-language explanation in your language. • You let the AI read the fields of a PDF form, check the answers it drafts, and export the finished PDF. Talk with someone • You use two-way voice mode to translate what each person says and hear the translation read aloud. • You type with Snap Keyboard in any app that allows custom keyboards to translate, correct grammar, change tone and draft replies. Full Access must be turned on. Sell something • You photograph an item and get a title and description sized for Vinted, OLX or Facebook Marketplace. • You paste the text yourself. Snap never posts anything. Keep your translations • Snap saves every translation on your phone together with its photo. Good for • Travelers reading menus, street signs and train timetables. • Anyone who needs to understand a contract, official letter or form in a language they do not read. • Talking with someone at a hotel desk, a pharmacy counter or in a taxi. • Selling used things online without writing the listing by hand. Works offline • You can translate typed text, camera text and photo text with no internet connection after you download the language pair in the language picker. • Offline translation uses Apple's on-device language packs, so the offline languages are the ones Apple supports on your device. • For offline use, choose the source language yourself. Automatic language detection needs a connection. • Text is read from the camera on the phone for Latin, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Devanagari scripts. Other scripts need a connection. • Voice mode, document explanation, PDF form filling, the listing writer, keyboard AI actions and any language pair you have not downloaded need internet. Privacy • No account or sign-in is needed. Snap works as soon as the app opens. • History and your saved form details stay on your phone. • Text is read on the device when possible. Some features send a photo or text to a cloud service to read, translate or explain it. The data travels over an encrypted connection and is not stored on Snap servers. • Usage statistics are collected without translated content. What Snap is not • Snap is not a certified translator. Translations and explanations can contain mistakes. • Snap is not legal advice. Document explanations help you understand a text, and a lawyer checks a contract. • Snap does not post listings or send forms for you. Requires iOS 18 or later. Point Snap at the next menu or letter you cannot read. The call

The clearest difference is in-app purchases: Google Translate at none against Snap's 12. Google Translate also leads on ratings volume (84K vs 44) and chart position (#2 vs unranked). Snap's advantage is review sentiment (50% vs 42%). On price, rating, update cadence and ads there is nothing between them.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

On the App Store both sit at effectively the same score — 4.3 for Google Translate against 4.4 for Snap. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Google Translate has 84K ratings behind it against 44, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews are what separate them: 42% of Google Translate's written reviews are positive against 50% of Snap's.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

Both ship on a similar rhythm, roughly weekly. The most recent releases landed on October 23, 2026 and October 18, 2026 respectively.
