Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: RTÉ Player at 4.7 against TVNZ+'s 2.0. RTÉ Player also leads on review sentiment (46% vs 5%) and ratings volume (6.3K vs 50). On price, update cadence, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.
RTÉ Player holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 2.0. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: RTÉ Player has 6.3K ratings behind it against 50, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews point the same way: 46% of RTÉ Player's written reviews are positive against 5% of TVNZ+'s.
RTÉ Player ships an update every 3 weeks, TVNZ+ fortnightly. The most recent releases landed on October 16, 2026 and October 18, 2026 respectively.
