Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: BookStax at 5.0 against Vikunja's 4.1. BookStax also leads on update cadence (every 9 days vs every 5 weeks) and iOS requirement (18.6 vs 26.0). Vikunja's advantage is in-app purchases (none vs 4) and review sentiment (83% vs 50%). On price, ads, monetization model and device support there is nothing between them.
Scored on Price · Rating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings · Update frequency · Ads · In-app purchases · Monetization · Best chart rank · Devices · Requires iOS
Both are free to download. BookStax sells 4 one-off in-app purchases. Vikunja asks for nothing beyond the download.
BookStax holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.1. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Vikunja has 8 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 83% of Vikunja's written reviews are positive against 50% of BookStax's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Vikunja ships an update every 5 weeks, BookStax every 9 days. The most recent releases landed on October 24, 2026 and October 28, 2026 respectively.
